2011 gt/cs - a few questions I have after 18 months of ownership...

I bought my '11 GT/CS in December of 2010. I wasn't in love with the mustang, but it looked pretty nice and I wanted to reward Ford for their business model. After test driving v6 and the manual GT, I wound up taking the race red GT/CS automatic they had on the lot. fast forward 18 months...

I LOVE my mustang. I have never had a car that I get so many compliments on. It's a PITA to maintain, but it's really grown on me. Still, there are some things I have concerns about or am wondering about. I would appreciate opinions/advice...

1. I don't feel enthused with the way the auto transmission puts itself into such a high gear at such low speeds (and often times I'm stuck on city roads at around 45 MPH. It feels like it has no power and just a light incline makes the car feels more sluggish. I have to give it a lot more gas to get it downshift or else it will wait until way too long (in my opinion) to figure it out what it needs to do.

I guess that's where the gas mileage comes from. I am getting 22.2 mpg which is great since I am about 50/50 city/highway. I love that part, but at the same time, but I feel like the car is under wraps too much of the time. Unless I'm flooring it on the on ramp, it's rarely showing what it can do.

I hear talk of tunes from people, but I'm not sure that's feasible or wise for me. I don't race. I don't go to the track. I just sometimes want the car to feel a bit more powerful at anything other than a lot of gas. Of course, I'm not looking to lose a ton of MPG either. Any ideas?

2. Anyone know how to get rid of wax that's on the black plastic on the bottom parts of the car? I try my best to not get any there, but oftentimes I'm waxing in cramped quarters and in less than ideal light.

3. I do notice a bit of oil burn and at times, i hear a knocking type noise at idle from the right side of the engine (at least it sounds that way from inside the car). Anyone think it's worth taking to the dealer? I've read some of the threads talking about issues, and the results seem mixed at best.

I had a 2006 GT V8 automatic, and a Bama 87S custom tune made this Mustang come alive. Throttle sensitivity, shift points and crisper shifts made that car a joy to drive. Gas mileage improved.
A tune will give you exactly what you are looking for. You dont even need a cold air intake or anything. Take advantage of Americanmuscle.com and their BAMA free tunes for life. Its a relatively cheap mod and it will deliver results. Their street tune would be good for what you are looking for, or their "hybrid" tune. They dont list that one but if you ask for it they will hook you up. You will be really impressed with how the tune wakes up your car, and because you have an auto, its going to make the shift points better and much more firm. You'll love it! If you dont, return it to stock and send it back for a refund.

One thing you may try, and I cannot promise it will have the effect you're looking for, is the 15amp fuse, #47 in the engine compartment fuse box. It is the fuse that controls the adaptive transmissions. Make sure the car is off, key is not in ignition, and pull it for 10-20 minutes. It will reset your transmission. There is a thread on the 2011 v6 forum that discusses it in great detail. (search "adaptive transmission snafu") I just traded my '11 v6 auto for an '11 gt/cs mt, but I did this on the v6 and it did make a very noticeable difference in throttle tip-in, and the lag between hitting the gas and upshifting. The car was overall much more responsive. Best part was, its free. Like I originally said, I don't know if this will help you, or even for that matter if it will work at all. But i know for a fact that it works on the V6's. Best of luck..

1. Get a CAI/Tune or just the Tune as other have recommended. Go with a reputable tuner like Brenspeed/Bama and you should be fine. This will make the car go from boring to Beast.

2. The wax will not come off without work. I researched this one back when I had a black on black Lincoln MKZ. I got white wax on the black trim and ruined it. From the research I done on it, they say to take an thumb sized eraser and put that to it. Otherwise if you don't clean it it will discolor the trim and ruin it like it did on my MKZ. Only way to fix it after that is replace it.

Go to a clear synthetic wax like Turtle Wax Ice spray on. It does not hurt the black trim at all.

3. I have right at 39k miles on mine and it still uses oil at approximately 1 Quart every 2k miles (which is considered normal for these engines). BE OBSESSIVE about checking and topping off the oil. Never ignore the oil level or these Coyotes or you will regret it. I will bet a good portion of the engine issues reported are due to owners ignoring the oil level.

Turtle wax Ice will remove the white smudges left behind from the other wax product you used before. love the stuff!:bigthumbsup
This sounds wierd but try peanut butter, then mothers back to black on your trim. The peanut butter softens and picks up the wax and the mothers back to black will make it look like new. Did this on my car and it worked great, but I did it just a few days after I waxed it.
+1 on the peanut butter! Also, isopropyl alcohol works as well.
I will say for waxing the car I really really like the Turtle Ice, they even tell you to put it one the black plastic (and on the 11/12's there is a lot) I use the Turtle "Black Chrome" to make any previous stains go away but once you've gotten them they seem to come back. The Turtle Ice prevents them!!!! Ice polish 1 or 2x per year, Turtle Ice wax as often as you want plus the wax is super quick to apply and remove.

Peanut butter or vegetable oil will remove the excess wax from black plastics.

In the future, use masking tape to protect all the plastics before waxing. Yes it takes about a half hour to do it properly, but so what - you obviously care enough to wax the thing, so do a thorough job.

LOL. The first time I heard of PB on plastic I though it was dumb, but I gave it a shot and it works well. I know it sounds absolutely insane, but the oil in the PB will take off the residue very well. You don't have to gob it on; just a little will do fine.

Oh, and don't be tempted to follow with the jelly...:winks

I know exactly what you mean about the auto's. I couldn't agree more. That easily correctable w/ a heavy foot but there is not a real good "in between". Let me tell you though b/c I have a Bama tune on an Auto.....A tune will not make the car quit going into a high gear like that. It will perform practically the same under "normal" driving in that sense. You'll still be turning 1100 RPM's at 40 mph and have to give it quite a bit of gas to get it out of that high gear just like you do now. That won't change.

It will however, change the shifting in that it shifts stiffer at all throttle levels. There is no "lag" between gears. And it does help some w/ the lag between when you give it gas, and when it goes. Also, shifting into high gear fast is def is why the auto's get good mileage city mileage.

However, the tune makes a HUGE difference in power and fun and won't reduce your daily milage or drivability (as long as you drive the same as you do now). You're gonna crap your pants when you floor it after you get the tune and you will love it (the power, not the crapping of the pants). You will think your car just got really p*ssed off about something and you're gonna like it! Be careful though b/c when it's all bogged down like that and you give it 1/2 throttle and it's "not quite doing it for you" so you go 3/4 or almost full throttle, it can go real quick from "ok, let's go to HOLY SH!T I better put both hands on the wheel LOL.

It makes it 100% more fun to drive when you're having a little fun. Also, try the "hill assist" button when playing around. It'll make the gears hold longer and allow to stay in that lower gear longer. Let us know if you have any more questions. Hope this helps. :bigthumbsup

Cr2011stang, we both got our GT/CS at the same time, got mine also mid december 2010. Glad you love your Mustang, it's really awesome!
I prefer manual transmission, but even with an automatic, get a tune, it will resolve your issues. It's really worth it and not that expensive, you'll love it, trust me. :bigthumbsup

I appreciate the responses.

Great idea about masking off the bottom of the car, I will do that from now on. Stupid I never thought of it before.

That being said...so the prevailing opinion is pretty much that I smear peanut butter on the affected plastic areas.

How long do I leave it on? Do you use soap and water to get the remaining stuff off, or does it wipe right off?

I have to say, some of these wax stains on the plastic have been on there for a year, so I suppose there isn't much hope, but I'll do what I can once I know how exactly to use the peanut butter.

That's what I do, in fact it is on most of the time, I just flick it off when on the flats or when I want the economy.

I always have it on for overtaking also.
