Hi, I bought a used 2011 mustang GT with a manual transmission this August (4 months ago). It had 17,000 miles at time of purchase. I've encountered a few problems with my transmission, mainly intermittent problems with it being hard to shift. . . Some times EXTREMELY hard.

Today I pulled out into traffic and tried shifting from 1st to 2nd and it would not shift. The traffic was moving quickly and I shifted around 5,500 RPM. The car behind me slammed on it's brakes and honked at me as I struggled to shift. I used a significant amount of my strength and forced it into second gear and let go of the clutch and the clutch wouldn't come but half way off the floor. I pressed it in again and it slowly came out. I eventually got moving at a decent speed and went to third and the clutch was still a little stiff but worked. In 3rd gear the car was making a grinding noise and the shifter was shaking like it wanted to come out of gear.

I've read about all the issues people have been experiencing but this case was really extreme and compromised my safety. I'd hate to take a loss on buying a car then trading it in promptly but it just doesn't seem that safe if the transmission only works intermittently. I'm going to contact my dealer tomorrow. Any suggestions or advice?

My guess is your car has a malfunctioning clutch that will do some damage to the transmission if you continue forcing the shifts.

Early 2011 GTs had a problem with a spring on the clutch pedal linkage. There was also a problem with loose flywheel bolts that may be at play in your car.

Take it to a Ford dealer before you do any collateral damage to the MT82.

^^^ Definitely this. There are several TSBs out that probably apply to your car regarding clutch, flywheel bolts, transmission fluid, etc. The dealer will know if any have been applied. Keep us updated.

I spoke to two different Ford dealers and I'm going to take it in tomorrow. The dealer closest to me wanted 110 dollars upfront and to reimburse me if they find out it's a issue that falls under the warranty then they would reimburse me. However, I spoke to the manager and he said that it wasn't necessary so I'm taking it in there after all. If they try to charge me up front I'm going to wait Monday and take it into the dealership I bought it from but it is about 2 hours away. Which means missing work and stuff so I'm almost better off paying the 110 if it comes to it... Anyways, it's kind of frustrating but I'm hoping for the best. I'll keep the post updated!

They aren't going to make you hand them $110 when you drop off the car. The $110 is a diagnosis charge. When a dealer hears "clutch" they need to be up front about the potential costs involved for diagnosis which protects them and informs you.

A clutch is a wear item, just as brakes are. If they find the cause is due to a wear item that's not covered under Ford's warranty policy Ford Motor Company will not pay the dealer for the parts and labor that went into your vehicle, therefore it will be your responsibilty.

Vehicles under 12k miles may be a different story. The rules change every year. Chances are it will be covered.

Things that will not go in your favor: Obvious modifications, bald rear tires, you're not the original owner, you bought it elsewhere, an attitude.

Good luck, let us know what happens :)

You should still get it escalated so we can help, bdy1985.

I wouldn't let a few issues scare you away from getting the manual. I have it and have had zero issues and I'm sure that is the case with most the cars, you just hear from people when they do have problems. Get what you want and hopefully all goes well. Good luck!

Okay, I finally got it back from the dealer. They replaced a bunch of items from the clutch, mainly the clutch plate and pressure plate were messed up. I only drove a little but the clutch is a lot easier to manipulate and it shifts a lot easier. It kind of feels weird though because the car wont start to move until the clutch is almost all the way out, where as before the car would start moving as soon as you started to lift the clutch off the floor. So basically, the first 50-60%, maybe even 70% of releasing the clutch has the same effect as it being all the way pressed down on the floor. Which is the car doesn't even move... I'll be driving it tomorrow but so far it appears to shift WAY easier

LOL, I beg to differ, I have owned compacts, V-8 sports cars, and trucks with both manuals and automatics and this auto GT is exponentially more fun to drive than anything I've owned to date. And even after a year and a half I'm still dazzled by how effective it is in translating the power to the pavement.

That fact that works/feels alot different than before they worked on it is probably a very, very good sign.

Pretty obvious that the clutch was creating the issues and I agree with what 412horses is saying.

Enjoy your Stang!:D

Thanks guys and yea I had more time to drive it today and its amazing. I love this car and my only complaint was how hard it was to shift and after reading all the complaints about it I was kinda losing hope and wasn't expecting much from this. Glad I was wrong!
