I am getting ready to Order a new 2011 Mustang convertible auto, I am thinking of a GT/CS cvt. not sure yet and color
Finally may local dealer gets them in, I drove them yesterday, a 5.0 and a V6.

The GT 5.0 cvt auto was real nice, power like a 5.0 should have, handles great, sounds amazing. A real throwback to my Hot Rod days with my 72 cvt 351 and Camaro
The V6 was impressive as well, more power then I thought, also sounds good, does not handle as well as the GT and you can tell.

To my disappointment was that there was not or I could not find a gear indicator on the dash? The Auto has a 6 speed and you have to look down to see what gear you are in? Am I or did I miss it?
I have a 2007 Acura TSX and it has a manual mode with indicator, I had a BMW 330 CI, manual mode, the new Camaro has a manual mode with indicators on the dash.

Am I missing something ? I think Ford missed the mark when they upgraded to Auto to a 6 speed but failed to include a manual mode
or at least a gear indicator... Takes the fun out of the 6 speed Auto
Will all Please help me with this one and say that I just missed it

You didn't miss it...my '07 GT is an automatic and it doesn't have a gear indicator in the dash. Nor does it have an "auto-stick" function, which I think is a shame...it's kinda frustrating to have to look at the center console when using the lower gears....anyway, I doubt anything changed in this regard with the '11s...

I'm shocked they even build a GT with an automatic!

Fun=manual

End of story

I agree...my '05 GT was a manual, then I got my '07 GT with an auto, supposedly to teach my daughter to drive...but wound up getting her a manual in her first car anyway...WTF?? So, my '11 will be a manual and things will be right in the world again....

manual is not fun when you live in the city and traffic lights are every 50 or less yards. now if i lived in fla or out west then that would be fun. where in ohio do you liv ei may have to move there so i can enjoy a manual

Be very selective in just what you order

Suggest you read both Car & Driver and Motor Trend June 2010 issues to help figure out what you really want and need. Each magazine tested both V-6 and V-8 cars. Each magazine received those cars to test with totally different options on them. Page 60 of C&D describes details of their V-6 model, how it handled, how they liked optional 19" wheels, how they could not figure out the handling yet for sure of that model.

Humor: If you purchase a manual transmission it is initially cheaper, it is much less likely to EVER have to be serviced or repaired, and YOU NEVER, NEVER HAVE TO LOOK TO SEE WHAT GEAR IT IS IN.:smoke:

I live in LA, and manual is fun. I don't want to offend anyone, but I think all the "reasons" they come up for getting an automatic is just to justify the fact that they can't/won't drive a manual. I have bursitis, I believe, so my knees hurt often. That isn't going to stop me from ordering a manual, though. All this talk about faster 0-60 times with an automatic is laughable. Anyone can put their foot on the gas pedal and go in a straight line. And, seriously, on a normal day, when would the 0.1-0.3 second difference mean anything on the streets? Of course, unless you are red light drag racing, which is stupid and dangerous anyways.

AND I'm curious - why can't I skip a line on this forum? I skip lines so it doesn't look cluttered, but as soon as I submit the post it turns into one giant paragraph. I've tried it in "advanced" and the result is the same.

EDIT: I figured it out. I'm running Firefox and I use the NoScript add-on. It prevents unauthorized scripts on websites to run by itself. I have to allow this website access for it to skip lines. Weird.

I'm in Lancaster. I wasn't out to pick on automatics, my 2006 GT is an automatic, it is still modded, runs like a raped ape and I love it. But it's not FUN in comparison to a manual. I modded the suspension, the rear gear, headers, CAI, tune, etc... and I thought, "Damn, this is a SWEET ride, I wish I had bought the 5spd". It does have it's advantages and I won't sell it, but when I heard 6 spd, 400+ HP, Brembo brakes, etc..., I knew this was a special car. I didn't hesitate, not once, my only choice was the 6spd manual. There is nothing wrong with the automatic though. Everyone has their own circumstances.

Guys
You are missing the point, There is still No gear indicator for an auto or manual LIke Other Cars
Ford Missed the boat on this
Even with a manual, and I love manuals, I have had old camaros and Mustangs with 4 speeds, a Gear indicator is nice to have. Ford made a mistake

I cut my teeth on an 64 1/2 mustang 289.

It was an auto and had no shift indicator in the dash.

I learned to just look at what i was doing when putting the car in gear and have never needed an indicator in my dash to remind me of what gear i had put the car in since.

Regarding manuals.

i drive them all the time..down town Atlanta.

Sure its a tad of a pain when you are at a 10mph stop and go in rush hour traffic...but its NOT THAT BAD.

Often times you can drive in mid first gear or low second gear and leave an extra car length ahead of you and not have to clutch more than every 45 seconds up to 1 minutes....

i can drive almost all the way up the parking deck without ever clutching in second gear.

I wouldnt give up my manual for the tad bit of convience it offers.

I agree 100%...I drove my '05 in L.A. traffic for over 2 years and other than being a pain to have to clutch every 5 seconds, at least it was easy on the leg, so I didn't mind. Now back in the day, a heavy duty clutch would have been a killer in traffic....

I never missed it, I guess I always just knew. But now that you've pointed it out, I've decided to sell my 06 and cancel the order for my 11.

It's still personal preference, who will drive the car and their experience level with a clutch, city traffic, stop lights, etc. People order what they're happy with. I don't plan to run the 1/4, race at red lights, or run a road course. However, I WILL drive along the beach roads, cruise the Blue Ridge Parkway, and enjoy life with my wife beside me. In an auto. V6. Convertible. And loving every second of it! :winks

An Auto? Isn't the reason to have one to just leave it in D all the time and not worry about it?

My 2008 GT is an automatic. I'm almost 51 years old, and I drive my car to work and back daily in LA rush hour traffic for 2-3 hours a day, and have a really bad left knee from multiple motorcycle accidents and unfortunately can not live with a manual transmission any more. I really tried... My last 2 cars before this Mustang were manuals with nice clutches... A 6 speed Audi RS4 and a 6 speed Infiniti G35 coupe. My knee is so much happier now.

Today I have a Bamachips race tune in my Mustang, and it shifts BEAUTIFULLY! Doug did an awesome job with the automatic shift adjustments. I put the selector in drive and the only fiddling I do is turning the overdrive and traction controls on and off.

I just wish the 2011 automatic was available from the factory with all the rear gear choices the manual is available with. Hummm.... Maybe I'll just test drive a new 6 speed manual GT, just to see... :racer:

autos r mauls its the driver choice and also at the track it petty much comes down to the drivers but. ford did not miss the boat they made it an acessories(spelling) option you can get the shift indicator light option if ya really need it. If they missed anything its the fact that one cannot have the shaker 1000 with the electronics package for the billionth year in a row

I'm with you on the stereo. Nav and Shaker 1000 would be the best combo to get IMO. I still think it's crazy you cannot have both.

gear light? Blah....Put it in "D" and forget about it.....IMO.

Here's what's goofy - when an auto trans had 4 speeds forward, the gearchange was labeled D 3 2 1. That made sense.

Now, the 2011 Mustang auto trans has 6 speeds forward. So what does the label on the gearchange say? D 3 2 1.
