Hello everybody,
I am an owner of a brand new mustang gt 5.0. I have joined this forum to get and give feed back about my mustang 5.0. I bought the car 3 weeks back and have already put around 1400 miles on it. I went to the dealer yesterday for an oil change. The service dept there was not 100% sure how to do the oil change on the 2011. Infact my car was the first one they changed the oil on. After I got home I was about to turn the car off but I heard a knocking sound coming underneath the engine. I took the car back to dealership and they say tht they can hear the knocking sound and they hv to call ford because they r not sure what the problem is.
I will really appreciate if someone can give some insight on this problem. I have researched online and all I could found was tht it could be a valve or lifter issue or maybe air bubbles in the oil.
It has ruined my day. Please let me know if someone has the same problem and solution for it.
Thanks.

Wow, sorry to hear the news.. I don't think I have seen anyone on the forum post a problem yet, or mention of getting the oil changed..

Hope those guys at the dealer remembered the new 5.0 takes 8 qts....

Hope for the best and please do post updates.

Why would you change your oil at 1400 miles? You shouldn't change it until the warning light comes on or atleast 6000 miles. These new engines will be able to go upto 10000 miles between oil changes. Don't know about the knock, would have to know more about it....is it just at idle? Where the knock is coming from? Check engine light on? Your dealer should know something, it is still a gas engine, the technology shouldn't be foreign to them.

From another forum - /2011 Oil Change - Page 2 - The Mustang Source - Ford Mustang Forum

I just came back from my 'Free' oil change. They told me i didn't need it changed yet with just 500 miles. I told them my coupon expires next week.....With just 500 miles, i got my oil changed on my V-6 with synthetic blend. Didn't cost me one cent.

The guy that changed my oil was shocked it held 6 quarts. He told me he put 5 quarts in, it showed low. Then he put another 1/2 quart, still showing low. He put the rest of the 6th quart of oil in. Showed to the full line. My Mustang was the first 2011 they had changed the oil on.
My advice for all new owners is to double check the oil level after oil changes until the service people get used to the new capacities.
Don't know if that's what's wrong with yours or not, but something to check.

Oil Changes

Ford may say 10,000 miles between oil changes but unless they use a tier 111 or higher synthetic and change a top tier filter after 5-6,000 miles I would change it more often. Remember, Ford is only interested in getting the engine past the warranty period. If the engine goes south after that then they are off the hook. If I did run it past say 7,500 miles then I would have an oil analysis done to see what the condition of the oil is with a given mileage on it. On a new engine, I would change it by a couple thousand just to be sure the oil is clean after break in metals have been deposited in the oil. After the initial oil change then I would start stretching it with analysis until I knew what the condition of the oil was at a given mileage. Given the cost of vehicle, oil chages even with a top oil and filter is cheap insurance...

Next time a dealer tells you they don't know how to change the oil on your car, brand new or not... RUN! Run fast, run far...

Lawrenceville? I am in Gwinnett also. First, which dealer did the oil change? I want to make sure I never take my car there. Even if they did nothing wrong, I can't believe they even mentioned that they hadn't changed the oil on a new 5.0L before.

If it were me, I would change the oil and filter again myself just to be sure.

Sounds like they don't realize that the new 5.0 engine takes 8 quarts. I strongly urge you guys to learn the simple basics of changing your own oil and filter! Build (or have built) two wood ramps that are between 2" and 3" high to drive the front wheels up on. That will give you ample room to squeeze underneath to wrench on the filter and drain plug. Always set the emergency brake before crawling under there. Walmart has a cheapo 15 qt capacity oil drain pan and they even stock the Ford recommended Motorcraft oil filter as well.
As with my motorcycle, I would NEVER ever let a dealer tech touch my vehicle unless you happen to be unfortunate enough to need warranty work.

I am a service advisor for the Ford dealer in Sandy Springs, GA. Cannot believe the dealer questioned changing the oil. Always, always check the oil level after the service is done; people make mistakes. I also own a 5.0 and our dealership specializes in Mustangs and Mustang performance - we even have an SCT tuning specialist on site! I would be glad to take a look at your ride and give you our opinion on what the noise you are hearing might be. I will wait until about 2k miles or so before changing the oil and switching to Mobil 1.

So, GT5

Did you check to see if the oil was at the low or full level?

Was it that simple and that the dealer just screwed up?

I am sure many of us who ordered 5.0 would like to know if it was something stupid or possibly a real problem..

First, why change the oil before 6000? The manual says 7500. I'll stick to 3-5K to be safe, but not at 1400. Second, if the Ford dealer doesn't know how to change the oil on a 2011 Mustang, just think what would happen if you had other problems! I agree with an earlier post, RUN, don't walk away from them.

Someone posted that Ford is only concerned about getting the engine through the warranty period. I disagree. If their cars were blowing engines at 61k after the warranty, how many people would buy Ford in the future? I don't think they will take that risk just to save a few bucks.

I don't know for sure but it sounds like to me that they didn't get enough oil in it!

If the car was fine b4 the oil change then what other explanation could there be?

If i use my free oil change (CHANGE MY OWN) i'll be sure to check the oil level b4 driving away.

Did you check the oil level at all after the change or after hearing the noise b4 taking it back to the dealer?

If you continue using this dealer let us know how you are treated. Also please keep us informed with the correction of the now current knocking issue & any possible fixes they try.

I am very grateful to all of you for replying to my post. The car is running fine but I could still hear the damn knocking noise. One dealership already stated that they cant fix it or have the know how to even find out where this knocking sound is coming from.
I changed the oil after 1400 because I thought it might be a better idea to change the oil which could hv metal shavings in it. I guess I made a mistake. The dealer told me that my car is the first one after he changed the oil. Before when I called him he said "Yeah Yeah bring it we can change the oil on 2011 5.0". I have checked the oil and the dip stick shows its good.
I will get second opinion from you and hopefully it will be fixed. I am pretty sure warranty will cover it.
The car is awesome and gives great gas milleage. I will take it to the closest dealer at my work tomorrow and will post the findings here as well.
Once again thanks for all your posts.

Yes, it is just at idle. I can't hear it when I drive it. Not sure if I hear it in 6th gear. Maybe yes if i try to lisn like a german shephard but not 100% sure. Well I hv the reciept from the dealer. I mean I dont want to publicly name the dealer on this forum before making sure what the problem is. I told the ford dealer to change the oil to fully synthetic. It could be some small thing or something big. The car runs fine. When the engine is cold there is no ticking or knocking sound. It starts knocking after it warms up. One of my fren said that it could be the oil pump. Any ways I will post the results here from the dealership.
In your opinion what could be the problem? I really hope its not a big thing.
Thanks

One more thing I would like to tell you is when you go buy the car DO Not get the security pkg or vin etching or lojack stuff or other stuff the dealer will raise the price like hell. I think thats one mistake I did when I bought this car. Mine is base with security package. The price I paid for it I could hv gotten a premium gt. Just a word of advice to you guys.

Hey I got your message; crazy at work today. James will be on this weekend and he can have Larry (LD Performace - our in house speed shop) take a listen to your motor. I will tell you the injectors on this engine are quite noisey and should be more of a high pitched click than a low "knock" noise. Did you check the engine oil level to make sure it is not low or over full? Let me know if anything else I can assist with...

Sorry I could not make in today. I did not know that in GA you get that much traffic jams. More than ny. I stopped by at Gwinett ford dealer and the service guy there said its normal its just the fuel injectors.Funny thing is I only heard this sound after I got the oil changed. I will stop by on your dealership on Saturday.
Thanks much

You must be new here. Just wait until school is back in session and you'll really see some traffic jams. This is the lightest traffic you'll see.
