I have the 3.73 and under full throttle 1st gear goes by in the blink of an eye. I can't imagine it being any shorter. If you shift by watching the tach by the time the needle is in the red it's already too late you've hit the rev limiter.
3.73s in the '11+ is, based on gearing and torque, equivalent to about a 4.10 on the '10-. Therefore, 4.10s would be equivalent to about a 4.30 on the '10-. Do you think a 4.30 rear end would've been too much on the '10-? If so, then a 4.10 is too much for an '11+.
Most cars I've seen around here with 4.10s on the back live solely at the drag strip (and a lot of them have 4.30 or more, anyway).
Well the difference between 3.73 and 4.10 in 1st gear @ 6800 rpm's is about 3.5mph, so I don't think that's enough to worry about.
I rarely use 1st gear now anyway, usually starting off in 2nd gear. I use 1st only for pulling in/out of the driveway and parking spots or stop-and-go traffic under 5-10mph, or when seeking the best launching speeds. Except for those conditions, 1st gear is mostly worthless now with 3.73's, and 4.10's won't make it much worse.
If you plan to drag race, with anything higher than 3.73's, you will have to use 5th gear to make it through the traps, even if you raise the rev limit to 7200 rpm's. Even if you used a 28" rear tire with a 7200 redline, your max speed in 4th will be 110mph.
With a 26" rear tire and 4.30 gears, you will max speed will be 122mph in 5th. On a stock motor you will be going through the traps at about 6300 rpm's in 5th at 113mph.
I think 3.73's are the right street gear, and 4.30's are the best drag strip gears, 1/8 or 1/4 mile.
With my setup, currently, 3.31's are good, due to the low 1st gear. If you want similar driving as your '10 with 3.73's, go to 3.55's in an '11. It's definitely not worth changing from 3.31 to 3.55 to me, but that would be your comparison, running a 26" tire of course. I feel that my current level of rwhp, 26" slicks and 3.31's is perfect for my 1/8 mile local track. I am not changing gears until I settle on which power adder and tire size, which will be 28" later on... Gotta finish my Camaro first, so no more $$$ on the 5.0...
