2012 Roush Mustang...I Got Into An Accident

Hello everyone,

Sad day really, I got into my first accident. I was approaching a slight curve in the road, I wasn't doing more than 35mph. I was in fourth gear, and did what I normally did and down shifted one gear down to third before I braked. The downshift I did threw my tires in the back out of control, inducing a fishtail. I tried to counter steer, but before you know it I'm on the other side of the road narrowly dodging two oncoming cars from opposite traffic. I hopped the curb with both wheels on the right side of the car. The mechanic said that the whole rear axle needs to be replaced. No body damage at all.

My ultimate question is, will my car ever be the same? Will the performance forever be changed? Will my car ever be the same?

I would think that if it was just damage to the rear axle, nothing should be a problem once you replace it. Now would be the chance to replace it with better gearing and wider rims/rubber!

I agree with Zach. Car should be just the same if not better depending on the parts you choose.

Maybe learn how to heel/toe shift. This would prevent the abrupt change in engine RPM that presumably induced a bit of wheel spin.
Yup rev match and this won't happen. I learned that lesson on an old '67 mustang of my grand fathers, he taught me how to handle spins and downshifts when I was 12 on ice covered parking lots. :)

Those lessons have probably saved my life half a dozen times over the years.

Don't need to do heel/toe really, just clutch, downshift before you know you'll be breaking, rev match, engage, then brake as normal.

I always downshift, but for some crazy reason the rev match I did entering the corner kind of missed...I didn't rev match enough, upset the balance of the car, and voila...I need a brand new rear axle.

It should be good as new. Be glad no body damage and you were ok. It would be great if there was a place one could get a feel on a skid pad to learn how to handle a stang in extrem conditions. There are times when this could happen to anyone.
I actually got good at matching the rpm's down shifting with out using the clutch on my old Dart. As far as the accident, looks like you lucked out. For you and all them others out there with a Roush, watch how you have it insurered. The VIN will show it as just a GT and may not be covered. I have always made them aware and sent pictures and added value.

I think I might need to find an open parking lot once it gets icy; obviously I need some more practice in some counter steer, etc. Thanks

Now that I've calmed down, I realize I did get lucky. I just hope the engine is okay; I'm sure the engine is fine, I'm just paranoid.

Did you have traction control off?
Make sure the right guys do it, and make sure they do it right.

Dont take chances with sketchy shops. Ford warranty backed work only.

An axle replacement will cost you close to 2k, plus the rims and tires. You are looking at around 4k total at the end of the day.

As for the fish tail, its something you will learn to anticipate. You begin to counter steer before the car goes into the slide.

Best of luck to you.

Unfortunately, yes...advancetrac was turned off. I always drive with it off unless the conditions are really bad in which today's case they werent yet.

I'm having the car brought to the dealership I initially bought the car from. What do you think?

As far as making sure they do it right, how could I do that? Ultimately, the Ford mechanics could do what they want. I just HOPE that they would do it the proper way.

Thats the place to bring it.

Make your presence known.

If they know you care, they will push their guys to do their best. If they see you are neutral about it, they wont take the extra precautions. Like i said, make your presence and your expectations known.

I would go inside the dealer's shop a few times, talking to the techs as they were working on my cars. I let them know what my expectations were. Thats just me being a nut though. The guys would get shaken up when they saw me in there :nogrinner

Will do...I plan on taking a visit to see my car tommorow at the dealership. We're all still waiting on the insurance before anything can be done.

I wonder if they'll let me sit in on the repair process?

They probably wont. I never asked for permission, i just appeared LOL

They dont want to have an extra liability in case something were to happen. They dont want you getting hurt.

donuts & brownies & beers will open all doors. :cooldude:
I like your words: "...got into my first accident" Are you planning on or expecting more? :nono:

Leave the TC/SC on when you're on the street, lesson learned. Plus, take the driving advice you've received here. 35 mph, eh....

....and yeah, the car can be easily fixed. I'd bet the whole axle will have to go though. I expect stuf is tweaked all the way across, from the looks of that hit.

What do you mean tweaked? Do you mean some connected parts may be affected/misaligned?

Yeah, it's probably bent parts all the way to the other disc brake on the drivers side. make sure you get a new axle to fix this, repairing what's probably bent up in this one may be more trouble than its worth.

thaen again, maybe you got lucky and just bent the axle and broke the wheel...it's possible.
