Hey everyone. I'd like to get some people's opinions on the differences between the 2012 v6 coupe and the 2013. I'll be purchasing either a 2012 or a 2013 v6 coupe in the spring and I'm not 100% convinced I should pay more to get the 2013...

I generally like the exterior changes to the 2013, definitely like the new taillights, not a big fan of the license plate holder blackout. Front grill I'm pretty neutral on, I like it but probably on an equal level with the 2012 grill. Also I really like the deep impact blue shade (http://forums.themustangsource.com/...27780815-2013-mustang-officially-here-344.jpg), would go with the kona for the 2012....

Anyway, do people think its worth it to go with the 2013? Any thoughts are appreciated.

The only way I like the 13's are the one that look like the one in the link you posted. It has the CS package I think thats what its called, I just dont like the stock grilles or the look but for some reason the pic made me like the look of the 13 with the CS

Well I've test driven the 2012 already, generally loved it. Obviously can't test drive the '13 quite yet...but I'm under the impression they will drive about the same...after all I didn't hear of any motor, suspension...etc changes coming in the 2013... But I could be wrong.

Yea that one does look nice. But I'll be getting a v6, rather than the 5.0 in that pic so I won't be getting the cs package.

Nice color for the 13 and I agree not a fan of the blackout around the license plate. If you get the 13 also get ready to be asked if it's a gt500. I am not a fan of the front end looking the same as a 2010 - 2012 GT500's and you certainly will not be able to back up the look. Not hating, I had a 2010 v6 and loved it! Just my .02

The 2013s also have a different gauge cluster, with different Speedometer and different Tach. They went from the white to a kind of grey colouring on them.

I wasn't a fan when i saw it..But the small screen between the gauges was cool, Id like that.

But I agree with you the license plate area is horrid. The taillights are cool, but the 2012 has cool tail lights too so its a wash.

The front end 'nose' isn't for me at all.

When I played this dilemma out in my head i landed on the 2012, especially with all the incentives, 3500$ off makes up for those tail lights :p

Same here, I would get the 2012, test driving both will not give you anything, as they are mostly the same cars, so at the end it's a matter of look, what you like better.

My reasons for not going into a 2013 are:
- I dont like that blackout space around the license plate.
- Not a fan of the tail lights who looks ricey to me.
- The GT500 front end wanna be.
- The hood that looks better from the 2010/11/12 IMO.

But to each his own...

Fully agree with this. I especially hate the plastic inserts on each side of the license plate groove, and the rear decklid panel which will get scratched and swirled up the first time anybody attempts to touch or wash the damn thing.

I love the tail lights but I'm not a fan of the blackout panel. If I had a '13 I'd scratch the panel myself, with sandpaper, then paint it flat black or something. I'm okay with the license plate area but it is a bit much. Definitely like the 12's better overall, inside and out, except maybe the Recarro option. Wish I had those.

Just curious...why do folks consider the tail lights on the '13 ricey? Is it because of the clear plastic covers or the LED design, or maybe the thin rectangular red light borders with the smaller lights in the centers? All of it together?

The reason I like them is because they're contoured with the shape of the trunk and they're segmented like the old school Mustang tails. I just can't get used to the quasi-European look of the '10-12 models. It's an American car, not European.

It's the same car just different styling. I think the only things I care about are the interior changes. Like the manumatic shifter for auto, the new electronic gauges (even tho for a v6 I guess it doesn't matter) and to see what the new shaker system is about. I have the shaker 500 in my car and I hate it. The Mach 460 system was a LOT better.

To me the 2013 tail lights look ricey because of the leds and the overall design they have; this is something you could see on a Toyota, Nissan or whatever Japanese brand, they don't look at all "old school" Mustang to me.
I'll go even further; I find them cheap looking, and in person it's even worst than on photos...

But again, to each his own. :worship

+1 on Asphalt Cowboy's comments on the taillights, except that I've not seen them in person. For me it may be an age thing: I'm 59 and suspect these lights were designed to appeal to a younger buyer.

As bad as the huge license plate surround looks, if it were smaller the body-color bumper cover would close in around it and probably make the back of the car look too heavy. IOW I think they made the plate surround that big to break up the rear of the car into smaller elements. The recessed area might actually look better painted body color rather than black.

As with others, there are things I like better about the 2013 than the 2010-12s, and vice-versa. I carefully weighed the pros and cons of each and chose to buy a 2012. My decision was partly based on styling, partly on economics. I wanted to take advantage of the free financing offer, and avoid the presumed price increase of the 2013s. But if the two cars had been available with the same incentives and at the same price, I probably would still have chosen the '12. The '13 just looks a little too Boy Racer-ish for my tastes.

Right now, I like the 2011/12 look over the 2013 but, I used to think the 2005-2009 looked better than the 2011/12. Not any more. Maybe the 2013 will grow on us all when we see it at's Ford's web site and on the streets.

Thanks for all the weigh-ins everyone.
I personally like the taillights, but I'm 22 so maybe they do appeal to a younger crowd more...

Overall I'm surprised the general consensus has been that they would go with the '12 over the '13 since the '13s generally were well received by the community (from what I've read)

I personally don't mind the 2 part grill they have on the v6, although I think it would look better with the roush style billet grille...

OP, sounds like you prefer the 13's just get one of those, the rebates are less on the V6 cars so if the price doesn't go up drastically there shouldn't be that much of a difference..

good luck with your decision..:bigthumbsup

You said you were going to get the v6 then I would not like 2013 v6, If I were you I would wait till the 13's come out, that way save you some money and buy a 2012 gt or 2011 gt if you can find one but if you want a v6 the 2011 or 2012 v6 or v8 will be even cheaper when the 13's come out and will probably still have incentives where as the 13's probly wont have incentives till a couple months later.

When I'm torn, going back and forth, and can't decide what I want, I let the bottom line decide. Why pay more for something if you're not sure you want it. Personally, I like the front end, but hate the back of the 2013's. I'm surprised you're not wrestling with the V6/GT dilema. Sure the V6 is still fast and gets better mileage, but I get longing looks from them at the drag strip when I'm getting on it in the 5.0.

Yea the only hiccup to that is that I am moving from NY to CA in the beginning of June, and selling my current car before I leave. Depending on how in demand the '13s are and how long it takes to build, I can only rent a car for so long while waiting...production starts in 'spring' so I'm not sure the timeframe that will result in
