Ford has transformed the Mustang from a muscle car into a true sports car, with a ride so dialed-in that even even the Germans want to take it for a spin. Not forgetting the car's roots, however, there's still the raw and mean Shelby GT500; a car that harkens back to the glory days of Detroit.

That is about to change in 2013, when Ford launches a very modern version of the GT500, tossing aside the big supercharger in favor of some very modern turbocharged technology. Ford will carry on using a V8, although the exact displacement of the powerplant is not known. Rumors of a 5.0-liter and a 5.8-liter have surfaced.

Power, as expected, will be tremendous. Move aside Camaro ZL1. Forget it Challenger SRT8. The 2013 Shelby GT500 will reportedly make an astonishing 650-hp.

I'd be more astonished if it had a aluminum space frame and carbon fiber body panels like a ZO6, more power is not what it needs

Agreed, it's be more interesting to see them tweak the car in other areas, shave a few pounds and do something to help with traction and put all that power to the ground. I can't complain too much about more horses though, that's always cool :)

I just recently bought a 2012 5.0 to join my Z06 because ford finally made a naturally aspirated V8 that had the power I wanted......I'm not impressed by turbo/supercharged power.......I'm an all motor kind of guy for street cars.....I love my new mustang......just the way it is....:gringreen

A turbo setup will weigh less than the equivalent supercharger setup making it less nose heavy and any weight would have a lower center of gravity.

I swear Ford has employees monitoring forums and the rest of the community and is taking criticisms seriously. Look at what they did with the handling between '08 and '10 then with '11. I wouldn't be surprised if they do find ways of freeing up some additional weight and improving traction, but maybe we will have to wait another year or two. Either way, can't wait to see/hear what this thing can do when it comes out.

Ford still needs to do more for this car if it is gonna beat out the ZL1. I was watching an hour special on the new Camaro ZL1 and it is producing 750HP and over 700FPT. With every option including nav and what ever else a fully loaded camaro comes with. The car was running 11.1 with stock tires on it and pulled a few runs of 10.6 ans 10.7 with slicks on it. I don't see the new Mustang hitting those #'s

More traction and ability to put power to the ground is what the 2013 needs. I mean, look at the 2011 GT500 Super Snake. 800 hp and still cant get to 60 in under 4 seconds.
I'm not sure what the Shelby team did to the rear of the new GT350, (0-60 in 3.7 sec and around 525-550 hp) but that needs to go into the GT500.

then it wouldnt be a mustang anymore.
Ford doesnt compete with the corvette because it doesnt have too..
the heck it doesn't...when the price tag is comparable then you are competing with it and alot of other high end cars...
If I had to make a pick of spending 60K+ on a car, the Shelby sure wouldn't be my first choice.

but for thousands of other people who will actually buy one. the corvette wouldn't even be considered. there is nothing special about a 2011 corvette. they will make as many as are ordered. they are not hand built nor are they limited production.

the shelby is in a completely different market base than the corvette. why people constantly compare them is a mystery

you also have to consider that your 60k corvette will only be worth 10k in 20 years. whereas the shelby could possibly be worth more than you paid for it. at any rate it will retain its value much better than the corvette.

650 horsepower?
Tarnation, son, who'd ever need to be in such a hurry?

(Back to the Future III reference)

Yea, that's a lotta power as compared to my 2002 GT with 260... and that's enough to put a smile on my face every day.

ha ha ha ha...worth more, what a joke, it's just as mass produced as any Corvette, that ZO6 will run circles around a GT500 and it is handmade, has carbon fiber body panels, brakes for a real sports car and an aluminum frame:...GT 500? It's basically a 20K car with bolt ons...sorry boyz, unless you're in a GT Supercar yeah, you really can't compare the two
