Hi,

I have decided to go for a new Mustang however I live in Montreal, Canada where we have 4-5 months of snow.... a lot of snow and freezing conditions.

I was wondering if there are any Mustang drivers out there that have owned one in winter conditions and do they think it's reasonably safe to drive in winter? Also is the V8 a lot harder to control in winter conditions?

Thanks

I'm not understanding the "I could barely control the car in dry conditions" part. What was so uncontrollable?

If you could hit the highlights of the vehicles you've owned, that would be helpful too.

Hi,

I've mostly owned trucks (AUDI Q7, Honda Pilot) as well as a Golf GTI so this will be my first muscle car. I know maybe everyone says this but I would like to consider myself a good driver with a lot of experience (I've always been a bit of a speed junkie).

My main concern is how usable is the RWD v8 mustang in the winter? is it a case of having to just park it for 4 months or can you use it for everyday use?

Thanks

A RWD V8 car is no problem in the winter.

A RWD V8 car is no more difficult to drive than a 70HP RWD 3 cylinder diesel car, or a GTI, or a Pilot. In winter weather, it is 100% all about your tires. Put the correct tires on a Mustang, and it is just fine. Other than for driving in deep snow, where clearance is an issue.

And FYI, Mustangs aren't muscle cars. Never were, aren't now. They're Sports Coupes, or Grand Touring cars, or a hybrid of the two, depending how you option them. Once upon a time they were called "Pony Cars", but that hardly applies these days.

If you can, keep another car/ truck for those heavy snow days. For the rest of the year, get the V8 and see if you can wipe the grin off your face every time you turn the key. Lol

If you get a standard GT, it will have all season tires. But you should still get a 2nd set of wheels and mud & snow tires for the winter.

If you get a Performance Package car, the Summer Only High Performance tires will not work at all in the winter. Seriously, not at all. You'll just crash and burn spectacularly at the side of the road, and then your fellow Canadians will cook s'mores and moose-burgers over the crackling embers of what was once your car.

Haha yeah I know, I already struck a deal with my dealer to include a new set of winter tires for free :) and I think the performance package is standard on all GTs (from what I see on ford.ca site anyways) but I am getting one with the 19 inch black sports wheels!! I can't wait!

Ain't nothin' free buddy. You're sure to be paying for them somehow.

Are snow tires a normal part of Canadian vehicle purchases? Because that would make a lot of sense.

I wouldn't say standard, but it's a good bargaining chip.

19 inch performance winter tires are worth $2000 and I'm not paying for them so they're definitely a bonus. I'm also asking for some sort of discount on the price of the car but lets see how I manage to get.

A reply from Toronto area

I live in the GTA and we have a bit less snow than Montreal. Driving for 4 months on snow and icy roads was a concern until I checked 2/3 in depth test drives in the Candian snow along with some YouTube videos. The car will do great as long as you put it in snow mode and fit it with winter tires.

I wanted a convertible and went with the EcoBoost Premium as I drive 110km to work and am planning to drive it on a daily basis.
I also traded in my 7-seater Mazda CX-9. So next winter will be my first Canadian winter without an AWD, and I feel confortable that I will have zero problem as long as I fit it with right winter tires.
Planning on getting a set of Nokiantyres next November.

Finally, if you are ordering your car (not already available at the dealership) and have to wait 4-5 weeks for delivery, you can push for more than $2,000 discount!

Thanks for the message! Yes I just ordered a GT premium without the performance package, with the 19inch mags. I managed to get the dealer to throw in winter tiers and a 1500 discount, so that's $3500 which I think is pretty good. Maybe I could have got them to lower it a little bit more but I just don't want to play the waiting game and see who folds first.... they said it will take 6-8 weeks which is such a huge disappointment as I can't wait for it!

They had the exact same car I wanted but EcoBoost and I almost bought it, and while I think the ecoboost is a great car, after driving the V8 GT I honestly couldn't imagine myself driving anything but the V8.... I do about 50Km commute to work each day but I checked the fuel consumption from other drivers and the V8 is actually more fuel efficient than my Honda Truck so fuel costs wont be really going up for me.

When you say get a 2nd set of wheels do you mean tiers or actual alloys?

Congratulations on your choice.
6 weeks is what bit took for my car to be built and delivered.
The ecoboost requires Premiumn gas which in Ontario will set you 12 cents extra per liter. So it was not a $ related decision.
I just wanted to avoid my stops at gas stations in -33 degrees Celsius. Stupid but true :)

The ecoboost can run on 87, but there is a (fairly significant) power loss that comes with that.

Think About It

For what it is worth I just moved back to Pennsylvania from living in Maine. My 2015 GT was stored in a barn from Jan 9th 2015 to March 14th 2015 when I decided to make my escape after spending 2 days digging out of 60 inches (5Feet) of snow. My GT and I left at 4:30 in the morning and never looked back. The snow was chasing me all the way through Maine. 8 and 1/2 hours later I arrived in Bucks County PA where it was only raining. The GT is a great car and I love it. The snow not so much. If you can store your car till the snow is gone go for it otherwise not a good investment in the winter wonderland.

My 2014 V6 has been great in the snow with snow tires, to the point I wouldn't have any hesitations getting another one (with any engine).
