how can you tell a 289 from a 302,other then the water pump outlet being on opposite sides

you have to check the code underneath the motor. should be located near the starter. Look up the code online to see what size it could be and would also tell you the year manufactured.

Up until 1970, all the small blocks had the outlet on the passenger side and shared the same pump, D3UZ-8501-A. Going to have to rely on the casting numbers.

it has the 13/16 sparkplugs,does the 302 have the 5/8 plugs?

depends, i have 289 heads and intake but realized later it was a 302 block someone put in..you could have a frankenstein like me

Both should have the 13/16" hex, don't know when Ford went to the 5/8".
