I bought new wheels (black fr500's, 20x8.5 & 20x10, rear/45mm offset) and plan on running 255/25/20's in the front, but I would like to have a little more meat on the ground then the suggested tire size of 275/35/20. To get the diameter pretty close it looks like a will need to run a 295/30/20 on the rear, but thats a pretty short sidewall and im afraid of bending the rim if hit a good size pothole on accident. I live in St. Louis and the roads are not horrible, but their not exactly great either. I just dont want to bend a wheel since it appears that you cant buy them any longer from AM. What are your opinions.

You are slightly pushing the limit with 295 on 10 inch rim. I have 275's on 9" rim and pushing he limit there also according to this link.http://www.allfordmustangs.com/foru...plain-me-whole-gt500-strut-mount-upgrade.html

Consult tire manufacturer for recommended rim widths.

295*.3=88.5 mm
275*.4=110 mm so almost an inch less sidewall. Just don't hit potholes.

255/25/20 OD =25.02"
275/35/20 OD =27.58"
295/30/20 OD =28.13"

Not sure what size tires and rims your mustang came with but you may need a tune to get the speedometer right.

25 sidewall front?! Let's not do that....to keep the stock tire sizes you're going to want 35 sidewalls.

I'd do a 245/35/20 front and a 275/35/20 rear

Assuming (which is a bad thing) that the wheels have the right offset and backspacing, I would run a 265 35 20 in front and a 305 30 20 in the rear. The front would have a diameter of about 27.3 inches and the rear would be about 27.2 inches. The tires should fit on the wheels just fine and will fit under the fenders and not interfere with the front suspension as long as the offset/backspacing is within reason. My tire choice would be the Michelin Pilot Super Sports which is what I have on one of my cars and they are great.

I'm running a 295/30zr20 on a 20X11 rim in the rear and a 255/35zr20 20x9 in the front.

The 295 will mount on a 10-11" wide rim. diameter is 27" even; mounted on a 10.5" wide rim.

Looks a little stretched but I like the combo.

Here are a couple of shots of my 305 30 20 tires on my 10 inch wide rims on the rear of my car...no bulge and handles great. My car came stock with 285 40 18 tires on the stock 18 x 9.5 wheels. So, if Ford saw fit to put a 285 tire on a 9.5 inch wide wheel then going 20mm wider on the tire and 12.7mm wider on the wheel should be just fine with no bulge or performance compromises even if the aspect ratio is reduced from 40 to 30. And since I've been driving (hard) on this set up for 8 years with no problems that should help provide some reassurance too.

Here are the fronts from my car (265 35 20 on 20 x 9 inch wheels). Fit perfect but an 8.5 inch wheel would be fine too (with the proper backspacing/offset).

Your concern for pinch flats, bent rims, and apparent wheel non-availability is well taken . . . strike 1


A 255/25-20 tire isn't anywhere near big enough (in terms of load capacity) for any S197 Mustang. A Miata or a BRZ, maybe . . . strike 2
