3.90 gears

If you do most of your driving in the city, don't care about gas prices or reduced gas mileage you would probably want the 4.10 ratio. I live next door in New Mexico and I have a 2005 GT with a 5-speed. I would go for the 3.90 ratio because of the long distances you have to travel in Arizona or New Mexico to get anywhere. I'm not a drag racer or street racer, I like to drive my car on the highway. Most of the mods I have done to mine since I purchased it is to make it handle on the road, I guess that is the road racer in me.

You can look at my ride and the mods in the Members Gallery.

i have 3.90s and love them...but theres only a few hundered rpm difference between them and 4.10s at 60mph
I notice Ford Racing doesn't even sell 3.90 gears. Why is this? Everyone always debates between 3.73 and 4.10. Is there some reason I should not put 3.90s on a 5 speed manual? They sound like a great compromise between 3.73 ad 4.10. I wan the quicker ETs but this is my daily driver as well and I put on a lot of highway miles. Anyone know of a reason not to use 3.90s?
it IS the perfect inbetween gear...i used motive gears and no problem with noise
i am running 4.10's and i drive it on the highway and in the city....works great no big difference a little gas mileage and some more rpm but it makes the car jump pretty good out of the hole.....i wanted 4.30's but went 4.10's for the best of both world kinda thing......
by the way i used the motive gear as well and no noise.....
4:10 for $1300.00

my ford dealer performance guy quoted me $1300.00 for a 4:10 install, that sounds pretty good, fully warranted etc.....

anyone pay more..less? he says 4:10 is a good tweener gear set up, more pocket zoom with some top end..
$1300 is way to high!!! Should be around $500 including the gears and install.
SAY WHATTT???
$1300 for swapping rear end gears?? What is that around $1100 in labor charges?
Dealerships never cease to amaze. I realize everyone has to make a profit to stay in business, but that is ridiculous

Bend over Abigail...LOL

alright I get it....my only concern is I want it done right and I want it under warrenty...also I have to check, since I bought the service package they may negate my mant. contract. I can't even get an oil change by a third party..which is fine with me since I paid for it all up front and they have a great reputation etc...but I will get back to him and find out what the deal is regards cost..I am sure the labor cost is astronomical...it always is...
crfalzon, you need to read up on the Magnesson Moss act.

For the price of that dealer install you could have it done by a third party two or three times to make up for any issues you'll ever have. The guy who I have had do all my gear work and all the gear work for my friends Jeeps is a stand up guy. Any issue you have bring it in and he will fix it. The only problem is none of us have had any issues so we don't know if that is true or not!! He is that good.
Having your rear gears swapped out isn't considered scheduled maintenance. That is what most maintenance contracts cover.
My $500 estimate includes $250 in labor and $250 in parts. Parts should be cheaper, labor might be a little more. On a new car about the only thing you'll need is a pinion crush sleeve, marking compound and maybe a couple shims. Bearings, races, seals should all be in really good shape. It's about four - five hours of work at $50 an hour = $200 - $250.

thanx Fleg appreciate the info....
I just googled and read some subscripts of the M&M act...

http://popular.thewavemedia.com/warranty.html

its v a volvo blurb but I have read from other sites pretty much the same thing...

HOWEVER, yea there's a however, this maintainance contract is above and beyond bumper to bumper that came with the car gratis...this contract is a seperate deal..for 2000.00 up front they do ALL servicing, (with rental for the day)that means no labor, no parts for all ....every 5000 mile maint. belts, filters, thermostat., windshield wipers, transmission tune up, rotation, washer fluid etc etc...up to 50K miles.....

the performance guy told me if I install a torque convertor and my traini gets jacked the inspectors will ding me...will an independant shop cover it? doubt it....the rear end? he says any wear or tear they can "track" to a higher perfomance gear COULD void the coverage.....I know its a lot of dealer BS..but, I have to consider that...they have lawyers on stand by ..I don't..:winks

I might just have to forgoe the convertor and settle for the 4:10, in which I wll take the advice offered and get it done at apex.... ..a perfomance shop in norcal with a great rep.

3.90 gears

Did you get your gears from Motive Gear or one of their Distributors? I would like to have the name of the place you purchased them.

Thanks, Bobby
