I have a few questions, hopefully some one can help. Im swaping the 302 block (originally from a 72') from my 66 mustang with a block from an 87 5.0 to make it a roller motor. I bought the water pump for the 87 because i was told that the one from the 72 block will not work, does the difference in the water pumps make a difference with the original pulleys from the 72? Or can i still use the pulleys from the 72? I was also told that i have to use the timing cover from the 72 and get a 50 oz. harmonic balancer and a 157 tooth 50 oz. flex plate that match the 87 block. I guess what I am saying is, will everything from my 72 block bolt on to the 87 block? what modifications do i have to do? I appreciate every ones help.

The stock 87 waterpump is a reverse flow designed for a serpentine belt setup. If you are going to use regular belts, you need to get an old style water pump.

I can't help with the balancer info. I don't remember which year that changed.

it will all fit but the 86+ 5.0 is built on a 50oz. imbalance and hence you must use the appropriate crank balance and flywheel for the 5.0. Both motos share the same archtecture so stuff does bolt up. You will need your timing cover and oil pan from the old motor on the new motor for it to fit and clear the crossmember and steering link in your 66. As stated the water pump must be for an older 302 if you use the old pulleys, or not if you keep the serpentine drive. also count flwheel teeth so you use the correct starter.

you can get the balancer from ebay it was i think 70 bucks, i also got the flywheel off of there for 50 and you will need the timing cover and water pump from a 68to i think 73 mustang, the flywheel and the balancer have to be 50oz.

well im going to do the same thing. you have to get the old timing cover oil pan and yes some times plug the hole for the dip stick. You also have to get a 50oz fly weel and harmonic balancer to make the engine work. the water pump is reverce if ur using the one out of the 87 so u have to get one for the old stile engines unles you plan on using the cerpentine belt then ur ok. from all that i have reed all other things will bolt right up.
all this info is from pages that I have reed so if any of this info is wrong i apologise. If your not sure do a google serch to find some answers.

Most of everything that has been said on here. To summarize, the block on a 5.0 will be the same as an early model block (but the 5.0 block is set up for roller lifters). I'm running at 85 302 block and have done all the conversions...it's quite easy, you just have to decide which options you want to go with (new or old) and stick to them.

1. Use your existing timing cover, or better yet, just get a new timing cover that is the old style since your existing timing cover is probably eroded away on the inside. Make sure the timing cover has a boss for a mechanical fuel pump if that's the way you're going to go. The timing cover will also have a hole for a front dip stick.

2. Take the oil pan off your current block and simply bolt it on to the new block.

3. Plug the oil dipstick in the back of the block.

4. If running a mechanical fuel pump, make sure you add an eccentric to the front of the camshaft to engage the fuel pump arm.

5. An old style water pump will bolt right up to your old timing cover. Just use your original pulleys.

6. You CAN use your 28 oz balancer and flywheel with that motor IF you have the entire motor balanced to the balancer and flywheel. When doing a rebuild it's a good idea to balance anyways.

7. Anything that is currently bolted to your existing 72 302 block will bolt right up to the 86 block you get.

The 50 oz balancer started well before 86, however.
