I can understand the shortage of funds and the need to save. This site will show the differance in tire size:
Tire size calculator
The info. shows the 235 55 17 has a circumference of 85.4" and the 225 45 17 has a circumference of 78.5". The 225 would make the wheels turn about nine percent faster if I figured correctly.

Can't tell you if that's good or bad. Should help you in a drag race.:)

MERRY CHRISTMAS and good luck on your decision.
Regards,
Ray

Use the tire calculator to stick with the overall diameter of 27", which is roughly what the stock tire heights are.
Definitely would not go for those tires. They will look stupid small.

Our tires are 27" in diameter (ish).

A 225/45/17:

225mm x 45% = 101.25mm sidewall

101.25mm/ 25.4 in/mm = 3.99" sidewall

3.99" sidewall x 2 sidewalls = 7.98" sidewall total

7.98" sidewall + 17" wheel = 24.98 (about 25").

The diameter will be 2" short, making your car have 1" more wheel gap, and ride 1" lower to the ground. Not good.

Hope you don't get them, keep looking if you can. S197... and the other replies also, were on track. That tire will look more like a rubber band on the rim, as well as, tracking a smaller diameter wheel size. Plus your speed will be inaccurate on your speedo gauge, i.e. you will be slower than what the speedo registers. If cant wait well so be it, but if you have enuff tread to last the winter, I would wait.
Hope this helps!

Hey for 80 bux you might be able to get a pair of good used tires for the front by calling around. Try running a yp search. might try Indio and Palm Springs areas too. I drive out to Havasu once a year and ppl always blow tires on tthe 40. So shops usually carry a good selection and sizes that match. Shld find sumthin to get you through the winter. Good Luck.

WARNING!!!!! I DONT SUGGEST DRIVING THESE LIGHT V6ERS IN RAIN UNLESS YOU HAVE PERFECT TIRES. IVE PERSONALLY HYDROPLANED AT 55 MPH; 720 IN THE FAST LANE HIT THE WALL TWICE EASILY COULD HAVE NOT BEEN HERE TODAY. WELL I TRY AND TELL AS MANY PPL POSSIBLE ABOUT THE ACCIDENT INCLUDING THE PERSON IM ABOUT TO TALK ABOUT. A GOOD FRIEND OF MY BROTHER AND I HAD A 06 V6 YESTERDAY IT WAS RAINING HOMIE WAS CLIMBING STRAIGHT (NO TURNS)UP A 60% GRADE LOST CONTROL HIT THE CENTER DIVIDER AND WAS EJECTED OUT THE REAR WINDOW. NOW IS IN A COMA. SEAT BELT WAS ON AND ALL! STUFFS SERIOUS IT S NO JOKE. I WENT AND BOUGHT NEW TIRES TODAY. PERELLIS REPLACED THE FRONTS. AND PUT A 245 55 17 ON THE BACKS THINK THEY WERE BRIDGESTONE. LIKE THE EXTRA TREAD. god bless this guy hope he comes through!
