Working on my little brother's car, he bought a project. It's a 1988 shell with a '91 computer and all mass air equipement(5-0). Bought the car like this and it has been tough just getting it to run. At first we had all kinds of vacuum leaks and an intake gasket leak, took care of all that. Now it idles ok, but any amount of throttle increase and it bogs down and starts to backfire. I know that could be many things, but any ideas will help.

P.S. This is why my stang is carbureted! Ugh

I had that same issue with my 84 GT 5.0L, turned out to be a timing and vacuum advance issue. Once the timing was readjusted and the vacuum source was changed the problem went away...and I gained more horsepower (bonus!).

Be sure the mass air sensor wires a clean and free of dust, lint, etc. This can cause those symptoms.
