5.0 not all that impressive? New Camaro Faster?

My dad is looking for a new car after selling his 04 Corvette. His had a 2001 GT And a 2006 GT And also had 4th gen Camaros etc so now his back and forth with what he wants. Anyway my mom and dad went to test drive both cars which were both manual cars. First they did the 5.0 I was on the phone with them while they drove. Anyway they got it on the highway and he opened it up and then after banging threw the gears he just said I'm not impressed my 06 GT with a tune felt faster not impressed at all. My mom said it was uneventful lol. So next they went and test drive a 2010 Camaro SS And right away he said this car is faster then the 5.0 it has more pull says he noticed it right away. They got on the highway and opened up the SS And both my mom and dad claimed the Camaro felt faster. I told them I find that hard to believe because the 5.0 is supposed to be faster I thought? Anyone else test drive both? Maybe the Camaro is faster from a roll while the Mustang needs a tune and the Stang is faster from a dig... I been trying to convince him to get the 5.0 but he never listens to me.

faster? not really, both are pretty equal, it's just the small block car has more seat of the pants low torque than the 5.0 which many do complain is just "too refined"...remember the engine style originally came in a Mark 8 years ago....
You must have really cool parents if they are concerned about which is "faster"...steer them towards a GT500 and then see what they say
to me the only appeal the Camaro or Corvette has is yeah, you don't need really expensive parts to mod it...it's why my 2nd car is a small block car...600hp NA

I can tell you first hand as someone who has driven both and as I come from Euro cars. Between the two the mustang is closer to the euro cars. The interior isnt great but is layed out better, the clutch and engine are smoother. The camaro's clutch is heavy and unrefined. The interior is cheap and overdone as well. My good friend chose a camaro being stubborn and not wanting to wait to order a new mustang when they first came out. I waited and got my car and drove it to his house. I let him drive my car and he was impressed and even a little depressed for not having waited. As for which is faster, a 3:73 geared 5.0 will destroy a camaro ss. Both stock of course.

Maybe your parents drove a 3:31 geared base mustang which would feel a little slower compared to an ss.

The Mustang is definitely faster than the Camaro stock for stock. Your dad needs to get his butt dyno checked. Even a 3.31 geared car is faster than the SS.
lol I told him maybe he just wasn't driving it right.. wish I could test them both out. I do agree with the one guy I think he felt the TQ Of the camaro which he is more for. He would love a GT500 But that wont happen way out of his price range. His looking at v6 camaros now.. Only because he just really hates the style of the new Mustang. I told him he wont be happy with that but its whatever he will regret it if he buys that.

Wow! A V6 Camaro! That's an epic fail.

Start a thread like this on Camaro5 with the cars switched around and set the record for the quickest member banned.

The other thing you have to consider is that the new GT has improved suspension parts over the 06GT. Since the suspension is firmer and better at its job, you just don't get thrown around as much which makes it seem less dramatic and slower. But I assure you it is not.

First of all you can't judge how fast a car is by the butt dyno.
I do agree though the first time I drove 3.31 geared 5.0 I was like that's it?!
I was coming from a fully bolted Speed 3 and that thing pulled.
Your father is coming from a Vette so he's used to that torquey G- force feeling. It has been proven time and time again the 5.0 is quicker than the Camaro SS from a dig roll whatever.
If SOTP feel is a priority your dad may want to stay away from the 5.0 especially if he plans on staying stock.
If he really likes the stang he can stay under warranty with the FRPP tune/3.73 gears which greatly wakes this car up and pulls way more!

I drove all three GT Mustangs (6M w/3.31, 6M w/3.73 & 6A w/3.15). I then drove the Camaro SS 6M. All three of the Mustangs felt quicker than the Camaro to me. I settled on the GT with the 3.73. No regrets.

I've driven, raced with and worked on all the new muscle. The 5.0's and SS' are VERY close stock for stock. Basically if anyway tells you A is faster then B they are wrong. It really is a drivers race on similarly equipped cars when it comes to the manuals. However the auto 5.0's are no doubt quicker then the auto SS'. The Challenger R/T's are just slow, even the SRT8 is only about equal to a 5.0 or SS and they cost way more. A R/T is lucky to break into the 13's.

^^This. I had a torque hand-grenade full bolt MS3 as well and that car felt way faster than it was. This car is faster than it feels. It's a minimum of a second quicker to sixty, is rocking its way to near 11s on a good tire and, it isn't trying to kill me every time I open the throttle.

I fixed the feel thing that I also noticed on the test drive, with the install of the Procal tune. That transformed the car's daily feel and gas mileage, for under 3 bills. Now I have the torquey V8 fun plus the high rpm power punch.

I have to agree.

It's a driver's race. Driven many of both cars.
Being as this is my FIRST Ford, I am pleased to say, I think I made a good decision in buying the '12 LS.

I had a bolted MS3 as well. The initial ''hit'' of torque is what made that car feel fast. The 5.0 just pulls evenly all the way to redline.
I was dead set on buying a Camaro SS, then I drove a 5.0.

That was my first thought too. With 3.73 gears my '12 GT goes like a bad outa hell. Even better with the tune. Certainly can't be mistaken for an '06 GT.

I had my choice and made it. I came from the GM family (2005 Pontiac GTO LS2 A4, 2009 Vette LS3 A6, and 2009 G8 GXP LS3 A6) but I'm not a total fanboy to any make or model of car.

First of all, IMHO the Mustang 5.0 is a better looking car. I agree it's a drivers race between the Mustang GT and Camaro SS, the manual SS. Now, if I could have bought a Camaro SS auto with the same HP as the manual, I may have gone this direction.

Lets see 5.0 coyote vs. 6.2 LS3 and it's still a drivers race? That right there tells me something.

Bottom line is that I was looking for bang for the buck. I drove mine out (non premium only option was 3.73 gears) for $28,300, while the same Camaro SS basically optioned the same couldn't be driven out for <$32,000.

push him for the Camaro so you can do comparos for us.

I can tell you this that I just sold my 2011 Kona 5.0 for a 2009 corvette LS3 and the vette will beat it stock for stock no problem..
