After removing the smog pump from my 1985 Mustang 5.0 it feels and sounds like exhaust comming out the tube that goes to the heads. Will it be safe to just plug these holes ?

I never messed with it but if it makes you feel better i don't see why not. All the "smog pump' does is mixes outside air with your exhaust to reduce your parts per million pollutants at the tail pipe. Undoubtedly one of the more stupid things we put up with since no real reduction of pollutants occurs.

Do you still have the tube attached to the back of the heads? If so I believe you can just take the whole thing off if you're not running the pump at all. Get 2 therma plugs and you'll be set.

Something like these.

I removed my system and left the pipe also. I haven't plugged it yet, but have been advised to cause if left unplugged it can lead to engine damage. I'd get the plugs mentioned above.
