'65 mustang coupe with rusted firewall

My son's and I have begun an extensive restoration on a '65 mustang and found not only a rusted cowl and floor board but also firewall. The firewall is good on the engine side but rusted bad inside. When we removed the cowl we also lost (do to rust) some of the firewall lip at the top. So now we have nothing to weld the new cowl to. Is replacing the wall to intensive and does it require a jig to hold things in place or just tack weldind in a few braces. We are new to the site and thank everyone upfront for the welcome and the much needed advice.Jim and Son's

I wish you luck on that. I am new as well and doing alot of the work myself. My bottom parts of the firewall were rusted so I got rid of the rust and was able to get a friend to weld onto the original firewall. SO besides having to manuver around to clean it off I am not sure how much you have to remove but I see at a couple different part sales shops its about 150.00 for the complete firewall.
Hey Jim,
My guess is that you will NOT have to brace it up if there are two layers there. When you get the firewall panel, remember, unless it's necessary, you don't have to use the whole panel. You mentioned you have to replace the top lip, for the cowl seam. If that's all it needs, make it easy on yourself and replace only what's needed. Without knowing more, that's my first suggestion for your project.
Thanks for the advice Steve. I'll post some pics so you can see the extent of the rust , and if the rust can be stopped or does it need new panels. thanks jim
Hi
I also had a problem with firewall, but my was completly ruined becouse of rust, i couldn't even touch it harder, becouse it was a hole on a place whenever i would touch it. My advice: buy a new firewall, it's not very expensive but u'll save really a lot of time. And the cost of a new firewall wouldn't be much bigger than the cost of stopping the rust and renovating old firewall.
