*What is the part (rod & hose) that goes left to right across the middle of the photo? It has a fitting on the end. The other end goes down behind the block.. near the firewall.

*What is it's function? Thanks.

Looks like the vacuum line for transmission modulator by where it's going. Mine isn't routed quite like that though.

I disconnected the one end while I work on installing a new carburetor. How should it be routed?

Look at the last sticky at top of page "vacuum and wiring". If I'm right it should connect to the intake log(full manifold vacuum). Mine is routed around other side of engine and I know mine is not stock routing.

what these guys said. the line is most likely your transmission vacuum line which goes from the modulator on the trans to a port on the intake manifold (not off the carb)
