67 I6 popping

I'm making a new thread because I don't think the problem is backfire. When I decelerate in gear or let off the gas at high rpm I start getting a popping noise from my exhaust. I originally thought it was backfire but I just heard a backfire from a chevelle and it wasnt what I hear in my car.

My timing is at 11 with new points. I just got a new dual exhaust. Any suggestions what causes this?

Thanks
SG

Check your exhaust for an air leak or maybe it's just how it runs with the new exhaust.:bigthumbsup
Make sure the distributor vacuum advance is connected to ported vacuum on the carb and not manifold vacuum.

Verify the vacuum advance is working and returns properly.

If these all check out run a proper compression test to check for a possible burned valve.
There is a vacuum line from the distributor to the carb. How do I make sure its working properly. Its a new line.
if you dont have some type of flowmaster or something like that style of exhaust, your exhaust valve may not be properly seating. that or the engine is out of time. (valve timing) check to see if its lose. not common but i have seen it happen once where valves timing is out of adjustment and it made some nasty poping backfire type noise.
this is just a simple check i would think it would be same for i6 but i am not 100 percent

to me it sounds like burned valves that arent sealing entirely
hope you get it figured out

I do have a type of flow master mufflers. You think that would be causing this??

What grade gas are you using?
I use regular gas but this time I used premium. The popping doesn't happen if I keep the accelerator barely touched instead of completely letting go on deceleration. Is there a way to have the carburetor opened a little all the time instead if fully closed when I'm not on the pedal?

I was going to suggest using 93 octane if you are using 87. I made that mistake with my 67 200 I-6 and it clattered a little going up hills and stuff.

Are you sure it is the exhaust/engine coughing? Can you feel it in the pedal and when you drive? You could be hearing the exhaust pipe, a bracket or the header actually hitting against something. And when you give it a little gas, it doesn't do it anymore. We had that issue with a truck before.

Hmm. Don't feel it in the pedal because if I touch the pedal at all it stops. It sounds like its coming from the pipes. Maybe the mufflers.

So basically turn the fan and make sure the distributor rotor moves at the same time?

i take it the car is a manual..... it is reduced back pressure, or full reversal... the engine is no long pushing but pulling some guys think thats cool! i bet it does it worse de-accelerating down a hill, or crappy exhaust!
