68 mustang w/ 60K original pampered miles. recently the shifter will not find park. in fact, all of the gear choices are odd. reverse is in park, reverse and neutral, drive is in 1 and neutral in d. it seems like the linkage has been "STRETCHED" and the shifter can no longer find the appropriate gear.

thoughts and thanks?

Yes, check the linkage. Not only does it bolt on with a nut, but the mounting bolt has to be turned to fit through the linkage hole, then bolted and secured.

Exactly! Sounds like the nut has loosened some on you and the linkage has slid. You may be able to see an outline where it originally was and just move it back or you can loosen the nut fully, put the shifter in Park and then pull the trans linkage all the way back to the rear of the car and tighten the nut down. Test the gears and adjust if needed, it doesn't take much movement for adjustment.
