I tore into the FMX a month ago and finally got back to it to reassemble it. I installed a new seal and O ring on the shift rod linkage. Required removing valve body but no problem doing it.

Here's the problem: the valve body has a steel bar that slides in and out right where the linkage is, inside the trans. The linkage has a nub near it. I can't remember whether this sliding mechanism is supposed to be attached to the linkage. Logically it must since it wouldn't make sense for it to be there in that way not attached to anything.
The mechanism is part of the valve body.. slides out couple of inches and is near the shift rod assembly (right there).

Can anyone explain what part I may have missing and a link to a parts diagram so I can get one. I'm getting old, I forget sometimes. Thanks, Bob

for those that want to this this job its not difficult but it should be done all in the same day.

Unfortunately, there are very few exploded views or diagrams of the FMX that would be helpful. Post some photo's of the items you refer to so we can better understand your issue. Otherwise, I suggest to purchase the DVD form Bad Shoe Productions on the FMX. Best detailed DVD on the FMX there is.

I found a view online and discovered that there is no piece or clip. The valve body was out of alignment. All mounting bolts were installed but still it needed to be repositioned. For those doing shift rod seals be careful tightening the 3 bolts attaching the valve body. They are soft so use a torque wrench or you'll likely break one. I used locktight so to be sure they would not loosen. also.. when in stalling the spring loaded ball/rod on the shift rod. Use grease to hold them in then install the shaft ANDNUT loosely. While tightening the nut try to align it while pushing down on the spring loaded ball/rod. Little at a time and you'll get in right. Hope this experience helps someone else.
