I recently bought an 88 GT vert, with 59k original miles. Car has been adult owned and garaged for roughly the last 15 years. Rarely driven, but I have to press the clutch pedal down to the last inch before it engages in 1st or reverse. Is that normal? Thanks. My first post here!

Sounds like you have too much free play.
Your car has an adjustable clutch quadrant.
Place your foot behind the clutch pedal and
pull up towards the steering wheel. It should
ratchet to the proper clutch free play. If that
doesn't help, it might be a stretched cable.
