My 88 lx has recently stopped downshifting at WOT. Could this be due to a poorly adjusted TV cable? Have I maybe stretched the cable by stamping too hard on the throttle?

I've read a few articles on how to adjust the cable but I'm unclear on which way the black plastic stick (excuse the technical jargon, lol) has to move. Towards the front of the car or the rear? And how far should I move it? I realise it will be a trial and error procedure but I'd hate to move it too far in one direction or another and have the cable snap...?

My understanding is that you have to use a pressure gauge to make the proper adjustment. If you adjust it yourself you could hose the tranny. Shouldnt cost that much to get it checked.
