I just bumped my timing to 12 degrees, and I have a tankfull of 89 octane at the moment. My question is, can knocking be a faint sound sometimes, or will it always be obvious and very noticeable? Took the car for a ride and so far it sounds normal through the rpms. I haven't heard the "rocks in coffee can" sound as I read it somewhere, just want to make sure there isn't something else I should listen for also.

that is the sound. with 89 and 12 degrees you should not have any.

You should be okay but I have seen cars that can't be moved from base 10 degrees and others as high as 18 degrees. More often than not you will be able to hear you car ping.
