Hello group! I am Danny in Ohio
I had to replace my 3g alternator. The last one the voltage was jumping up to 18 volts when driving.. It was over 10 years old. I ended up getting a new 3g with a upgraded cable 4 gauge.
I also replaced the battery.
I got everything hooked up and it ran great.14.50 volts steady! i never drove it much.later that night i come home and start the car the voltage meter on dash was really low. I checked the voltage and it was 11.50v. i turned it off and made sure the cables and plugs in the alt. were in. I started it again and the voltage went back up to 14.50v.
The next morning started it again. the voltage was low.checked all the wires again. the voltage was still low.. i went inside came back out started again. it was 14.50v again.
Also my ignition has started to act up again. The turn signals and blower fan won't work unless you shake the key a little. i had replaced it years ago. the connector was a little melted but not too bad. i am planing on replacing both the switch and connector plug tomorrow . I tried turning the key off anf on to see if i could get the alternator to work. it didn't seem to help..Does anyone think the ignition switch and connector have anything to do with my alternator?
Thanks for any help!

It sounds like there is a short with massive current draw. Replace the ignition switch, especially if wiggling the key has bearing on whether items work.
Replace it before you have a fire.

Hi Group.

I replece the ignition switch hoping that was the problem. The alternator seem to work..
Then later on in the day I tried it again and it was not charging ..

I was reading that sometime the dash "battery" light has to be working for the alternator to charge and have the right voltage 14.5v. Is this true for the 1993 mustang? Someone said to just turn on the key and if the battery light was out the bulb could be out and it would keep the atlt from getting the voltage.

I am still trying! haha!

I dont think that bulb being out will keep the alternator from charging. I just got done change my cluster bulbs and i noticed there was a resistor wired in parallel to the battery bulb on the cluster itself. The only purpose of this is resistor is, as you may guess, still pass the exciter voltage to the alternator and allow it to charge even if the battery lamp is blown or removed.

I still cannot figure it out.. sometimes it works fine 14.50v than other times it is not 11-12volts..
Any ideas? I have been searching all through the net for a few days.. I have learn a lot about other problems. haha
Thanks!

ok.. Today I noticed when i first got in my Mustang i turn the key and the flash of the warning likes came on as normal. The battery light too.then they all go back off and I started the car and the voltage was normal. 14.5 volts.
I drove to the store. I got back in an turn the key and the battery never lit up at all. I started the car and the voltage was low like it wasn't charging again.I got home and turn off the car and tried again. the same thing the battery light never came on and the voltage was 11.5 v. Has anyone had this problem? It is a new alternator.
thanks for any help!

Did you check all the connectors at the alternator? Sound like something is making and braking contact which would explain why it randomly decides to charge and not charge

It seems odd that that a new alternator would only work intermittently. If it is hooked up right, and spinning, it should be charging. When you say the "voltage was low," are you using the voltage gauge in the dash, an aftermarket gauge, or a multimeter hooked up to the battery? The factory gauges can be fickle, especially if the dashboard has been apart several times (like during heater core installs). When the "voltage is low" is the engine slow to turn over? If it really was running @ 11.5v for any length of time your battery would start to suffer and it would start to kill the battery. If you haven't already, put a multimeter on the battery when the voltage gauge is at 11.5v and see if that's what the multimeter reads. The ignition switch can make electrical accessories not work correctly. But mainly I'm thinking the gauge could be off.
