I've got a manual 99 gt, and just yesterday I started hearing a loud clunk after engaging the clutch while shifting.
I got under it this morning, played with the tires and the driveshaft a little and there is quite a bit of play between the rear tires and the shaft with noise coming from the diff.
As long as power or pressure is on, it sounds fine and normal, but starting from first and shifting as well as tight corners its rough.
I do drive the car pretty hard although I wasn't when it started.
My fear is the rear diff is shot,
what do you guys think?
Thanks,
Tyson

The 8.8" rear ends are pretty tough, but can break, I suggest pulling the rear cover and see if metal or chunks of metal fall out with the gear oil. Thats what needs to be done first. A rear diff can always be rebuilt....:bigthumbsup

I checked the u joint, its solid, the play is definitely coming from inside the pumpkin, and I agree, especially because its stock those gears are pretty beefy.
Ill try and pull that cover off as soon as I can, weekends kinda busy.
Thanks
