9K miles in 9 weeks on the MT-82

Lots of discussion now with the NHSTA investigation, not that there wasn't much on a continuing basis since the MT-82 came out. I have read most of it, here and other places, and in fact had done so prior to my decision to order a car with this Getrag.

Quite a vocal group. Crappy Chinese built transmission, POS, etc.

I wish everyone a wonderful car and Mustang experience and hope all those with issues get them resolved, one way or another.

It's a shame I should feel the need to state that this thead isn't intended for flaming.

Here are my thoughts based on my experience with my transmission driving 9000 miles in 9 weeks; (Note, 2012 built 5/4/11. Also note although obviously many are highway miles, there have been plenty of gear shifts, as many of these highways were 2 lane with numerous 20-45 mph 'S' curves. What I enjoy and I'm in a part of the country that offers much of this type of driving. I also do a lot of in town driving and love shifting this car...I rarely skip any gears).

1) Clutch pedal must be fully depressed to get full disengagement.

2) Strong centering spring lines up shifter perfectly into center pair of gates (3rd and 4th gear). Beneficial to use an open grip on the shifter when going to 3 or 4 to ensure spring does all the guiding.

3) Gates are fairly tight.

4) Centering spring must be countered accordingly when shifting within or into the outside sets of gates (1 & 2 or 5 & 6).

5) Centering spring should be used to bring the shifter into the inside pair of gates (3rd and 4th), not right hand muscle memory.

If all the above aren't adhered to, missed shifts will result. Do that a lot and hard and ?????

In my time with this car, I've missed 3rd 3 times upshifting from 2nd when accellerating hard, because I didn't follow rule #5. I've inadvertantly downshifted into 2 lower gears than I intened a couple times because I wasn't adhering to rule #4.

I've experienced tough or notchy shifting into some gears a handful of times because I didn't adhere to rule #1.

When cold, it is a little reluctant to go into second. I'll double clutch or let the shifter spring to center before pulling back into 2. No problem.

Mine's not noisy and I've not had a fluid change. Talked w/my Service Mgr when we did the 5K inspection/oil change (went to full synthetic, btw and will stay w/5W20) and we agreed, if it ain't busted, don't phk with it.

I think I have an outstanding transmission. I know when I don't focus on my shifts, I cause issues.

A final note; I'm 52 and have been driving since the age or 14. Easily, 2/3 of my driving time and owned vehicles have been manual transmissions. Granted, this is my first 6-speed mating 400+ Hp to the rear wheels.

I absolutely love this car and I believe Ford hit the SOaB clear out of the park with these Mustangs. Coolest thing I've ever owned, and I've had some killer stuff, including a 200 Hp bass boat, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, various awesome motorcycles, both street and motocross, over a dozen outstanding guitars, Brunswicks best 8' pool table playing surface and a heck of a 55" LED/LCD TV (put 10# on the first month I had that).

If you don't agree or have problems, I can't stop you from writing here. I'd suggest you do what ever it takes to make yourself happy including starting your own thread, flaming somewhere else, selling your car, putting your fist through one of your own solid core doors, or any combination of the above. Don't yell at your woman, kids or kick your dog, because if I hear about it I'll come find you.

Here's some pics that don't do this awesome car justice.

I agree with you......after having put 3000 miles in 2 weeks on my 2012, I find that my shifts are a lot smoother if I use finese over muscle to jam the gears into place.......I noticed right off to let the centering spring do it's job and with a little practice my shifts are very quick.....

I'm nearing 48 years old and most of the vehicles I've owned have been manual transmissions.....

I'm still working on 7k miles after 9 months, let alone 9 weeks!

I can understand frustration leads to less then analytical thinking and irresponsible blaming, being in the auto repair buisness myself. However I firmly believe the Getrag to be an awesome trans with perfectly matched gear ratios for the Coyote.

I've ripped some serious gear changes at the strip and have only been let down by my own technique and lack of concentration.

I've also taken some of my own time trying to help those with issues, lending my experience to provide insight as well as how-to's for possible improvements. I've even driven with a fellow AFMer with those issues to try and find some answers, unfortunatly without any conclusive results.

I hope we hear more positive thoughts like yours dafreeze, maybe to balance out some of the negatives.

meant to include the increadible 401A front interior pic, but am having troubles loading pics for some reason. BTW, no wrinkle issues w/mine...I don't treat it w/leather stuff, either.

G,morning, Grimace. I don't even have long drive to work, less than 3 miles, and I drive my Ranger in couple times a week, too. You're doing pretty well w/7K in 9 months....got a roadtrip planned yet this year?

Dude your pics are making my heart race! Keep them coming!

I've made a few 2 hour road trips, one to MIR for the Spring 5.0 shootout as well as going up to PA to see my girlfriend's family. I might make a trip out to Austin TX to see my family and maybe hit the Texas Mile in October. That would easily be a 4 or 5 day drive if we stop in all the places my girlfriend wants to see. I will definitely be taking my Nikon with me and maybe capturing some of the countyside like you have.

BTW I have a friend out in Redmond WA who works for Turn 10 Studios, the makers of Forza Motorsports. I'm not sure I'll be driving out that far, but maybe fly out there. Also my best friend lives in Hillsboro OR so I'm running out of excuses not to head out that way!

I echo everything youre saying, my trans is a bit grabby going into 2nd but only for the first 2 minutes of driving first thing in the morning. it is quiet and smooth shifting otherwise. Im even happier since Ive added a Barton shifter and bracket
Nice, Very nice to read some positive reports for a change and I'm guessing there are a whole lot more very happy owners........Plum
Here ya go Grim...rootin' for your Texas trip. Btw, I spent ~ 5 years total in Newport News. Really liked it out there.

10000 miles in 90 days. Had to slam the breaks on real hard the other day and downshift into 3rd at 50 miles an hour to prevent from killing a dumb asses wife (passenger) that went across 4 lanes after doing a u turn under freeway. Car wouldn't let me have a gear for a few seconds felt like 30 seconds put was only a couple. Other then that ok. my V6 started messing up at 12,000 miles. Hope you didn't jinks yourself.

He probably ordered his mustang which gives you excact build dates and eta. If you get the car on a lot you just see it's production month. I may be wrong. Maybe you can get the exact build date by searching you VIN#?

My 2011 Mustang (built 9/2010) is approaching 13,000 miles and the MT-82 is trouble free. I am finally getting proficient shifting the MT-82, but I will be adding a shift light to keep from redlining in 1st gear. The Coyote revs so fast I have trouble getting the MT-82 into second before the redline!

I hope the shift light does not prove to be a distraction and cause you to lose focus. Personally I use the sound of the engine to determine the shift points and I short-shift 1-2 anyway. My limiter is set at 7,600rpm right now simply to avoid hitting the limiter either between shifts or going through the lights in 4th(I don't actually shift that high, more like 7,300).

Wow 9000 miles in nine weeks my average is 10000-12000 a year, have fun.
Nice write-up and photos. No problems here either.

My car has an 8/10 build date. I've had it just about a year, and I have a whopping 2927 miles on it. It will take me 3 years to catch up with your 9 weeks of driving! I may be doing a trip from Indy to Yellowstone National Park after the spring melt. That will rack up the miles.

I've noticed the transmission shifts very smooth and very fast with "soft" low-effort shifts. I can do it with my finger tips faster than using my arm and full hand grip to ram it. I am pressing the clutch to about 4" above the floor for normal driving, not nearly at the bottom. When side stepping the clutch I go almost to the floor but not quite.

Damn nice trip!

I agree with your review. The transmission is "different", and I admit it takes a little skill to use, just like any transmission, unless it is in a Honda. I believe most of the people who complain are hitting the 1-4th thing in addition to not knowing how to work different types of transmissions. I'm at 15,000 miles now with a 6/17/10 built date. Learning the transmission nuances really paid off and it bangs through gears... anything I miss at the track is my own fault.

Thank you for posting your positive experience and thoughts about the Mustang. It's so refreshing to hear a non-negative opinion on the boards these days.
