Has anyone just removed the lower grill grid so more air can get into the engine compartment and because it's a pain to clean?

For about $50 and change you can get a GT500 "airsplitter from your local Ford dealer that will effectively do about the same thing without running the risk of having debris damaging your lower grill-protected components.
