I think the 4.6 mustangs are very dependable. Being an 02 you dont have to worry about the intake manifold cracking at the plastic crossover like the earlier 96-98 and some 99-01s had a problem with. Your manifold (well the one u would be gettin) has an aluminum crossover. My car has 62k on it and slightly modified and Id trust it to California and back. Only thing i ever had a problem with besides basic maitenance was the Idle Air Control valve went bad. THis controls the idle, well part of it and when it starts to go the car wont idle and will die. It gets clogged with carbon over the years. It started acting up around 55k. Some say to take it off (which is easy) and to clean it but its better just to get a new one. Like 45 bucks at the local auto parts store. Other then that thats the only thing i know that can go bad and does alot, but its a super easy fix.

5 Speed or Automatic?

If you get a 5 speed, pay heed to how it shifts, particularly between 1st and 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd.

If its hard to get it to go into these gears now, wait until cold weather!

Synchros are a weak point with these 3650 transmissions (although it is a much improved tranny over the old T-5s, etc). There is a Technical Bulletin about this listed on this site. Since it sounds like the car is out of warranty, this won't save you any money, but its good info to know.

The other weakness has to do with the adjustable clutch cable and plastic quadrant. This is a frequent aftermarket replacement item (good kitss can be had from www.mustangtuning.com for about $70) if you need one.

Finally, my personal 02 has a noisy throw out bearing at only 15000 miles, and it is a known issue with these cars. I fully expect to be replacing it soon, at which time I am considering upgrading the clutch.

If you have an auto, much of this means nothing.

Glad u stepped in. I have no idea about any of this being an slushbox owner;)
I picked up my 5 spd. 2000 GT with 48970 on 3/29/03. To this day I have 82320. I had to replace my driverside power window motor, and #3 & #4 coils. The only reason the coils went out was because I accidentally got water in there:sterb: .

The damn thing has been running like a CHAMPION! :laughlitt
Cop

The COP issue (small cracks are also sometimes found) seems more problematic with the 99-2001 models. I have seen a number of posts at the various mustang forums regarding these problems, with some people pointing to water shorting them out after a power bath at the car wash, etc. It still seems to be a relatively rare event, but certainly does happen.
