AOD Tranny issues, shifts into 2nd late when it's cold

3076 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Masshole
She shifts into second late especially when cold and hardly ever shifts into overdrive Could this be a TV cable issue or is a 17 year old automatic just getting tired? Fluid looks good by the way and she never slips...

Thanks Joe

sounds to me like it needs rebuilt!
haha yeah not till 1st and 2nd go..haven't hit mega bucks yet!
doesnt mean you need a rebuild....tv cable is always a thought when aod's not running well. The aod overdrive servo is notorious for wearing out in the tranny. Not a really complicated fix either if you are a little ambitious and have a bit of time. Has this aod ever been worked on..maybe a new valve body or shift kit?
Since you say "when it's cold", I'm guessing it's better after the tranny's warm? If so, that sounds like it could use a freshening up, 17 year old tranny's get tired and clutches and bands get worn. I bet that's what it is, as long as it improves after it warms up you have some time. But start working on a future rebuild. You can get a full rebuild kit for around $300, then whatever it costs in your area for some tech to install the parts.
Well the saga gets worse today i put the new radiator in and decided instead of topping off the tranny with regular mercon i'd try some lucas transmission fix...recomended by the parts guy...now i have no second gear at all what could've causes this i tried flushing some of the fluid out through the cooler line and it was deffinately darker than it was before the lucas... it's good to know the rebuild kit is only 300 but i'll be doing the work myself and tips pointers tools i'll need etc?

ps i'm wicked bullshited that the lucas killed my tranny has anyone had a similar experience with this product?

and someone said the overdrive servo goes bad and can be replaced does the second gear have a similar system and if so is it possible to access it with out dropping the tranny?
and no this AOD has never been modified flushed or anything..well except for my partial flush today...i'd be very interested in learning how to fix the over drive servo as well if you don't mind explaining it a little "masshole"
yes, the aod has a 2-3 accmulator that I did upgrade...a little bit more work than the OD servo, but I doubt you'd have any trouble......send me a private message on what exactly you would like to do and Ill give it my best.
Problem Solved

Problem fixed after removing the valve body and completely cleaning it i realized in the reassembly that the TV linkage was sticking all the way forward i'd been driving it for weeks like this i freed it up with some brute force and lube refilled the tranny and she drived like a million bucks can't even feel her shift when i'm not stepping on it..and to think i almost had it rebuilt because of a simple stuck linkage amazing the things we over look! And to all those who think AOD's can't handle miss adjusted TV's mines testiment that they can thank fully what a well built machine i love ford!
And thank God to i would've been sooo screwed had it needed a new tranny at this moment!
Cooooool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
