Are 3.73s Worth it??

2167 Views 19 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  oneFASTmustang
I mean do these really add any kick to my car?

Im concerned about freeway mpg but I what I really want is to get up and GO!

I also race 1/8 mile a lot but I am installing Maximum Motorsports upper and lower control arms so I should hook decently w/ some gears, right?!

Thank You for any help/ advice!

And I really tried to ask the few little questions i couldn't find answers to after searching for hours on here.

Yes they're worth it. They don't actually ADD horsepower, but they get your rpm's into the powerband quicker. So you will really feel the acceleration.

Highway mileage isn't too bad for me. I'm running 2500 rpms at 75 mph. 2000 rpms at 60 mph. So I average about 20 mpg on a tank. Depends on how often you put your foot to the floor!! :D

go 4.10's .youll notice a huge difference and there is believe it or not no mpg diference . just how you drive the car. a stepper gear lets your engine perform better and you gain top speed. lots of people will say you lose top speed but that is a misconception. 160 for gears and they cost about 200-300 for install. and they are well worth the money. youll be wondering why u didnt do it in the first place. below is a quote i found via google that makes sense to this. research anywhere.

"Well here's my short tirade on why that guy doesn't know what he's talking about. 4.10 gears in a basically stock Mustang will actually increase your top end. WHAT??? You say? Here's why. And I'm really tired of explaining it so all you others that like to give this advice "4.10's are WAY too much gear for your car on the street" take note.

Mustangs do not have enough horsepower to overcome the drag at high speeds. Let's say for instance that your top end is around 155 drag limited. With the 4.10 gear, your engine doesn't have to work as hard to turn the rear tires. So not only will you get there faster, but since you're now actually using the horsepower more efficiently, you may actually get a 165 mph top speed." -mustang forums

I run 4.10's in my 96 SVT Cobra Convertible, 402rwhp and 418rwtq. N/A with too many mods to list. In the city, I get 20-21mpg. reason being I'm able to cruise in 4th gear all through the city and it keeps my RPMS down. On the highway, I get the same mileage with the extra gear I can cruise at 75mph. with no issues at all. 4.10's are an excellent, all around gear as long as you don't keep your foot in it all the time. And you'll definetly see a big difference, in your accelleration from 0-60mph. plus, Mike. SCT Tuner.:bigthumbsup

Gears are well worth it, you will feel a huge difference all around. They are the best bang-for-the-buck mods to be had.
but with 4.10s will i ever be able to hook up at the track?? :scratchchin

on street tires that is? or will i need to grab some drag radials and rims to mount?
the 245/45's can handle it pretty well. those are the stock tires sizes on 99-04 gt's. the best thing to do is find out your self. it wont be that bad really. if you got decent tires on there.
Im running 275 Toyo Proxes and will have Maximum Motorsports Upper and Lower Control Arms on in a day or two.

It would be fun to run my stang w/ 4.10s and some Drag Radials tho.... I just dont know if there practical for the street you know? Where do you think the gears + drag radials will put my 1/8 mile times??? :scratchchin Right now im at 9.4sec.

I don't really agree, I have 3.73's and 245/45 tires... traction is PATHETIC. I can easily spin 3rd on a decent shift, with 4.10's it would be a lot worse. I would still go with the 3.73's though, unless you plan on going f/i later, in which case 3.55's would probably be best.
i have 3.73, wish i went 4.10. highway milage seems the same
I think 3.73 is a great all around gear especially if your running some type of F/I. If your N/A, maybe 4.10 is the way to go. For me, its just too much driving around town, I think 3.73 is more than enough in my opinion. Im sure mpg will be affected somewhat with 4.10 gears compared with 3.27, cuz I noticed a small small drop when I went to 3.73, but I tend to drive with a lead foot sometimes. But if you do go 3.73, youll notice a big diff compared to the other bolts on you haave added, and 4.10 would be extremely noticeable. I know a couple people who have gone from 4.10 to 3.73 or even 3.55 due to city driving.

if your are afraid, then quit.if your are happy being in the medium, then your never going to be the best.410's all the time.456's will be affecting your mileage and top end,not 410's.unless you drive a 5.0 or other push rod engine.
yea if you guys are fans of 3.73 than more power to you! I hook up very well and haul @ss with my 4.10s and if everyone else runs 3.73 than that gives me a nice little edge :shigrin
dont you already have 4.10's???

Im happy with my 3.73 or the "medium" cuz I dont need any more gear, I have a much better power adder to make up for it, which gives me more of an edge. Im one of the quicker 2v street stangs around here and Im proud to say I dont need 4.10. Not trying to sound cocky or anything, just clearing it up that you dont need 4.10 to be the best.

I was going to go with 4.10's for my mach 1, but sounds to me like 3.73's might be just as good.
dont you already have 4.10's???
Are you asking me? :scratchchin Yea I do.... I got them just a few days ago after starting this thread.
