It's not absolutely required if your car is not overheating. It basically concentrates the air flow stream better through the radiator and keeps it a little cooler than without...

If I were you and I had one laying around, I would go ahead and install it since it's cheap insurance and easy to install...

an shroud question...

Hello shommel,
As Boat735 correctly tells you, it acts as a tunnel
to direct the air through the radiator fins. The air is pulled
inward by the fan. The shroud just helps tunnel it through.

I would for certain install it for 2 reasons.

1. - Extra safety when working in the engine compartment
2. - Some car shows they are a requirement. (SAFETY issue)

In any case please install it fi you have it. It can't hurt the cooling either

an shroud question...

Hello shommel,
Sorry I missed your question.

I can not say for certain about the shroud size, but I doubt there would be.

Make certain it clears the fan blade and mounts to the radiator securely.

Hi Shommel,
I Have a stock 65 mustang, i had to buy a metal fan shroud because of the heat in austraila. It works well, but i did have to buy spacers to fit shroud. There are different sizes, depending on the thickness of your radiator. It has worked well for my car!:yup:

Unless you're trying to compete in a concourse class it doesn't hurt to add one. I put a Ford tooling one (the plastic one NPD sells) on my 68 289 and it has made the engine run slightly cooler. I ran for years without one and never actually overheated but the gauge did climb high at times in the summer getting caught in traffic, the shroud has helped there.

As mentioned it forces the fan to draw the air through the radiator than also pulling some from the sides without one.
