auto shifter plastic cover replacement avaiable?

21570 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  amustangrocks
I have a 2006 with auto trans, and the fake chrome is coming off the plastic shifter handle at the top seam. I see that aftermarket aluminum round side pieces are out there, but I want new a center part or some kind of cover for this one to cover that seam . Is something avaialble?

I was thinking of maybe gluing some black leather on it but I'm not too handy with that kind of work.

you could try calling tousley for a part number and or the "online price"
Tousley Ford
it wont pull up the shifter on the site, but the phone number is on there and they can look it up. i think you can only get the entire shifter. might be near the price of the tci.

That aftermarket shifter is too tall for me. I like the height of the stock shifter, a leather cover for the center section would be cool.

we looked at it the day you posted this. you are talking about the handle part on the top right? its not flat though, it has the raised up section in the middle. maybe i`ll have marcy look at it again, dont hold your breath :nogrinner
heres some chrome covers

Yes, its the center chrome part that would be the main "shaft" of the shift lever. It looks like it is a plastic cover, front and back half that screws together to cover a metal shift shaft. Where it joins together right on top the fake chrome is peeling up. this is right where the palm of your hand rests on the shifter and feels crappy.

It seems like a nice leather cover could be made to go over this center section and maybe it could wrap around and have snaps that hold it in place.

These are just the round parts on both sides with the push buttons, right? Does not include center part I'm assuming.

You can see the seam on the center part on top in the photo. The edges of the chrome veneer are peeling up at this seam on mine.
shifter peeling fix.

I have the same issue and could not find anything so I had to make it myself. For some reason I was not able to attach a pic so you will have to go to2008 Mustang Shifter | Flickr - Photo Sharing!. If you are interested please e-mail and I can get you all the details

Coould you tell me more about the TCI? (Price, what it does, etc...) You can PM me if needed not derail the thread (any further...)
THANKS!!
Mike
pm sent. theres videos out here showing the tci in action. great looking part buster. we`re still kicking around a leather cover. theres been a couple guys that used a manual shift boot( the manual trim ring fits the console cutout and fits over the auto shifter) removed the t top and cut the boot to fit over the square shaft, which covers the indicator lights, and looks different but does nothing for the top of the t. we could make a 4 panel shift boot that would fit way better and no slices, but the peeling t top is a bummer. ford should offer parts instead of the entire shifter assembly. i hated the plastic junk shifter fords used. i had the base model all black shifter which is way better in that theres nothing to peel like the silver ones. the tci is sweet but i wish it came in all black
I have a stock auto shifter 'parted out', with all the exterior parts (covers, knob, etc.), if someone wants them.:winks
The shift handle on my 2008 mustang is also peeling. i have grey duct tape at the seam but this looks well - like what it is. Does any one have a solution or suggestion. I just fixed the sagging interior panels and now this.
