auto transmission boot problems

ok so i was driving to work today and when i got there i noticed that there was just a hole in my boot. the part that shows what gear your in thats connected to the shifter just decided to come off on both sides of the shifter for no reason, so now even though i can't see what gear i'm in theres a hole in the trans and i really don't need something falling down there by accident, is there anyway i can fix this myself so i don't have to pay for it. thanks
