bad crankshaft damper symptoms

2173 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  beernuts
I just bought my friend's old 94 5.0 for $1000 (135,000 miles). Love it, but timing sometimes seems off and voltage reading fluctuates a lot. At highway speeds, the engine is smooth and consequently the voltage reading is stable too. I know a bad crankshaft damper can effect timing, but can it have an effect on grounding? Or can it be causing slack in the accessory belt and causing the alternator to fluctuate. Any guidance from seasoned Mustang folks is appreciated.

It's not the dampener, or a problem with the belt. Dampener wouldn't effect timing like that unless it were so far gone the engine would shake like it was missing on 4 cylinders, and it'd be doing it even worse at higher RPM. Belt would be squealing like a cat was caught in it.

First thing to do is take it to Advanced Auto, Autozone, or whatever. They'll check the whole charging system and give you some good input on it for FREE. Then give it a complete tune up. Change out the plugs, distributor cap, wires, PCV valve & filter, inspect everywhere for vacuum leaks!

99.9999% chance you'll fix your problem doing this. And get better mileage n more HP to boot!

My bet is the vacuum leak, but do the other stuff! An unstable idle (that you can barely perceive) won't allow the voltage alternator / voltage regulator do their job.

Run some fuel injector cleaner and premium gas through it to. You follow through with these few things and you'll be shocked at the improvement in the car.
