BAMA Tuner: Drive Idle questions

823 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  jpgamboa
So last week, I was messing around with my tuner, and set my drive idle to 922rpm rather than the default 572rpm, and realized that it eliminated the rattling under on my exhaust due to a broken bracket.
Just last night, I ended up blowing the gasket next to my thermostat, and some small hose, similar to this. I was wondering if I blew that gasket and hose due to my higher drive idle rpm, or is it just normal wear and tear?

Hey jpgamboa,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you're having here but I don't believe that this in relation to the tune and it's sounding like this is regular wear and tear. My '01 Bullitt ran through more thermostats than I can count and I would have it checked out locally if you're able to do so!

Just to help diagnose a little... How many miles do you have on the car? Did the hose look like it was dry rotted? How about the gasket? It could just be a coincidence. Setting the idle that high shouldn't be that bad. Did your temperatures spike or did everything look good when the hose and gasket went?

Let me know if you're to have any other questions and I'm here to help!

Alex
It probably was about to go out anyway...coincidence that it happened after you altered the idle rpm. I wouldn't blame you changing the setting...
I agree that it's probably just a weird coincidence. For example, my car here in the dead of winter, when it's -30 out or still relatively cold, my car will idle (in both drive and park) much higher than it will in summer. I suppose that it's possible that the increased idle speed may have made the engine/ cooling system have to work a bit harder, but that would have happened anyways.
Sorry about the late replies, @AMAlexLazarus, the car has high mileage, about 180k. Temp gauges were normal, car started to smoke. Im guessing that when the water blew, it hit the headers? the hose had a tear in it big enough to fit a quarter through. Thanks for all the help!
