Barton shifter Q - reverse effort

748 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  DangerRanger
Hello,
I installed a Barton shifter last year on my '07 GT and definitely like the upgrade over stock but find the effort to get to reverse quite high. Much higher than stock. Is this normal? or did I muck up the install? The car is away for the winter so I cannot try anything till summer. Comments appreciated. Thanks.

Mines much smoother after Barton install, but reverse and first still have a slight notch at first and reverse. If you haven't changed your fluid, I'd recommend changing with 3.2 quarts of Pennzoil Synchromesh. At the least, go into other gears before trying first or reverse.
Mmm,
I did switch out the fluid for a recommended Royal Purple option (Synchromax I think) and I wondered if this caused the issue. The shifter/fluid swap occurred on the same afternoon so my testing was flawed. Do you think the Pennzoil Synchromesh would make a difference? Thanks.

Tremec recommends against RP in the TR-3650 from what I've been told. I'd change it.

The Pennzoil Synchromesh made a big cold difference in mine, but I was coming from Mercon ATF.

Thanks very much for the advice. Now to source the Pennzoil in Canada!

Slight tangent. I have some RP gear oil for the real end (3.55 limited slip) on the bench that I was going to 'install' this summer. Perhaps I should not. Thx again ...
Well I had to share ...

After many hours of 'net reading on the subject it appears there are many camps and multiple 'Tremec' recommended paths. I decided to contact Tremec directly and the response I received was as follows ....

"Tremec Recommended the Dextron 3 ATf which is what was supplied in the trans to Ford, for an upgrade you can use the Mobil one Synthetic ATF."

I did specify a '07 Mustang GT Tremec 3650. The mystery continues!

I had the same issues getting a straight forward answer. If you read the wiki page regarding the T3650 you get the same ambiguity. The articles say that the engineers of from Ford even recommend Pennzoil, but other places I've read the Mobil 1 or Motorcraft. Who knows, at the end of the day go with what you think is best, the difference is minute at best.
