Hey Guys I've just bought my very first Mustang. A brand new 2012 V6. Its completly bone stock. I've never really worked on cars before and dont have a ton of knowledge about cars. But I was looking at doing some upgrades but I have some questions. The first is A cold air intake, Is it really just a bolt on? I seriously have to do nothing else other than just put it on? The Second is a Tuner, is it really that simple as a plug in, and will a tuner remove the 113 speed limiter?(I know I cant go that fast with out upgrading tires and such, Just would like to know that I can.) Thanks guys I would really appreciate some help and feedback

Q#2> No, not just plugin, also have to push a few buttons and turn the key. Yes it can remove the speed limiter.

For the most part the answer to both your questions is yes but it does not stop there. You need to do some research before making a decision. 1st it is usually a major purchase and second, you really don't want to do it twice.

Cold Air Kit. Most actually install easily if you follow directions. Performance is similar on most. Folks here tend to lean toward AirRaid since it seems to work really well. If I get one, that will be it. I currently have a K&N drop in but that is for convenience more than power.

A Tuner is a great option and arguably the best performance upgrade for the money. Yes, it will release the speed limiter. It is easy to install but instructions must be followed to the letter. Afterall this is a programmer and will require you to follow a sequence of steps during the procedure. A mistake here could leave you sitting and require a call to the company who made it to bail you out. Most have no issues at all but following directions is the key to success. The custom tune will be tailored to your car (Bama) or could be a "canned" tune if purchased from another source.

Brandnewstang, welcome to one of the two most enjoyable psychoses (other is falling in love). Greetings from Lebanon Valley Dragway, where in a couple hours Ford Day is the first event of the year for us Ford guys.

I've been at this a while (since 1969), but a lot of the other guys will have better ideas. I'd reverse your order - unless money is not an issue - the tuner provides all sorts of future adjustments, as well as hours and years of entertainment. You can be satisfied for some time with these two mods, I'd predict. You may want to ponder a shifter - aftermarket ones really help this six-speed's factory one. Then at some point you'll want some rear suspension upgrades (control arms), and maybe, later on, gears.

This board does not have a lot of head cases on it - you've come to the right place.

I would definitely go with the tuner as the first mod. You can always upgrade the tune as you do more modifications.
As far as difficulty, if you can turn your key to the on or off position, you will have no problems. The only thing is, the initial tune install takes 15-20 minutes. So plan on a little free time. :)

Be very careful with the tune and the speed limiter being removed. If you have the Pony Package like me with the Pirelli P Zero tires you are good to go as far as tires the are concerned. In addition you will need a new drive shaft. An aluminum one from Shaftmasters will do the trick. One of the reasons the car is limited to 113 mph is so the stock drive shaft doesn't explode (which it has for some people so be careful) Other than new tires and a new drive shaft you should be good to go for about 160 mph before you have to start doing suspension upgrades, and getting some different aerodynamics. IMO leave the tune alone for now, because once you do a tune you need to do additional things. Since you are a beginner i would go ahead and get a Cold Air Intake (i recommend Airaid) and stop there for now. See how the install goes, see how the car drives and feels with the extra power then start deciding if you want to do more. Dont forget that with a tune you are basically overclocking the engine, just like you would a processor inside a personal computer. In my opinion this isnt the best thing to do on a brand new engine. If you ever bring it in to the dealer make sure the stock tune is loaded back on so when they run a vehicle diagnostics report they do not find that you are all of a sudden running 93 octane with increased fuel air ratio, ignition and valve timing. Could equal warranty bye bye.

I'd say for a beginner a great mod would be exhaust. It actually gives you that more aggressive sound that you're after.

I am confused about the speed limiter. I have the bare bones V6 stock and hit 120 the other day and it appeared that I could even go faster had I tried. How do we know if we have a govenor on these things or not?

They are all limited.

You changed the wheels and tires, did you get the tune corrected for the new tire size? If not then your speedometer is off.

I've seen this statement posted a few times (not just the previous poster). A tuner purchased by an authorized dealer who employees a qualified programmer (my experience is with Paul at Torq www.gettorq.com) can tune your car above and beyond (IMO) what BAMA can do...I also get free tunes for life...something that AM offers as well. So the point is not ALL other sources provide "canned" tunes, there are many that can customize the tune to your car as well.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but my dyno results before and after adding a CAI beg to differ (that is if MORE power is something you desire in your car). After the Airaid (otherwise stock with no tune) I added 4lbs of torque and 8 more HP at the wheels. Add a custom tune to that, and from bone stock I added 9 pounds of torque and 17 more HP at the wheels. You can feel the difference a CAI makes, and you can hear the difference a CAI makes.

I'd definitely say a tune should be your first mod! That's the way to go, if you really have the need to exceed 113 MPH and you want a few ticks off your 1/4 time or just some extra get-up-and-go in heavy traffic. I've hit 140 once, with my tune and stock driveshaft, and have hit 130 many times over, with no signs of impending catastrophic failure. Aside from a few lemons out there, these cars are built pretty rock-solid.

Everyone is free to express their opinions, even when your's is wrong. My CAI and tune added 22 HP and 32 TQ at the rear wheels. I get better gas mileage, it sounds so awesome, and the performance with the tune is way more than just what the dyno shows. Best starting place is the CAI/Tuner combo, IMHO, but mine happens to be right!

Isn't there a thread here that states that they do not adjust any parameters on a tune for cai vs stock?
If that truly is the case, then I can only conclude the cai is not all that and a bag of chips. Look at it this way: As soon as the throttle is even slightly closed, the restriction is not in the air intake, but the TB. Which makes me wonder how you get better mileage. I have to think that the engineers at ford pull hairs out of their sack to improve mileage. If they could get more mileage that they can advertise with, they WOULD ALL HAVE IT. And the stock intake is pretty much cold air.
But, this horse has been beaten to death. Whatever. I been drinkin.
