Bell housing and throwout/clutch release bearing job

My bellhousing is cracked on my 5.0 and the car is squeaking at idle (I'm pretty sure the clutch release/throwout bearing) so I'm planning to take off the tranny and replace the parts. I have never done this job before so I have a couple questions.

Do you have to support the engine? If so, would you recommend that I just buy an engine support or try to rent one. Same with a transmission jack (do I need it at all?). I'd like to do this as cheaply as possible. And I read about somebody doing this with his rear end on jackstands too... I only have 2 jackstands (and one jack). No problem with only jacking up the front end right?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but it's a 92 LX and I'm wondering if the bell housing off an 89 GT will work (I'm looking for used ones). Are they all T5s after 84? I'm fairly sure it's the stock transmission so I think it will work, but want to verify before I buy it.

I think the mounting bracket/gasket thing that goes between the bell housing and the engine is cracked, so I'm going to plan to replace that too. One of the used bellhousings I'm looking at comes with it. Would it be ok to put a used one on there if it's in good shape?

Finally, any tips on the job? Would you consider it to be a very difficult one? I've heard some advice on replacing other things while you're in there such as the clutch/pressure plate and pilot bearing, but I'm on a tight budget so I'm reluctant to do this. Would it really be foolish not to?

Thanks to anyone who can offer me some help.

You could let the motor lean, if anything it helps reach the upper bolts of the bellhousing, if your mounts are old though I recommend just using something tied to the motor and the front radiator support to keep it in it's original position so you don't tear them any worse. You can do it with 2 jack stands just jack her up high that way you can reach the driveshaft bolts too. The bellhousings are the same so no worries there and it's fine if you use a used block plate as long as it's in ok shape, but make sure yours is broken because to remove it you have to take off the clutch and flywheel. Just take your time, overall it's not a terribly hard job to do honestly, when your taking the tranny off take off the t5 from the bellhousing, than the bellhousing itself. Do the same when you're installing it, as you put the tranny in sometimes it'll go almost all the way in and won't seat with like 1/2 an inch to go. Instead of fighting with it or worse just torqueing the bolts down to get it to seat up against the bellhousing, hook up the clutch cable and have someone push in the clutch for you and it'll pop right in. Hope this helps and let us know how it goes.

my car sqeaked at idle too with the car in neutral and the clutch out. i also thought it was the throwout bearing. took it all apart and replaced it to find out that it still sqeaked. i think it was the pilot bearing in the end of the crank that the trans input shaft rides in. never changed it though, engine blew up.
