I want to Autocross and/or road race. Honestly I would like to have a race track to drive on or a parking lot to play in and get to know the car's limits better. What is the easiest way to do that? I know there is the SCCA that you can join that has events and what not. I got my car modded as you can see in the sig. So I know that is probably gonna put me up against big fish. I have gazed over the rules for mods and I am not 100% sure what class I would be in. The tables I was looking at didn't show forced induction. Maybe my eyes looked over it and didn't notice it amongst the MANY mods/rules/classifications. I live in the Savannah GA area. I saw a whole slew of mega badass porche's going down the road. Talking GTR2, Turbo S, and some others. Talked to one guy and he is in a porche club that does that stuff. Any info would be appreciated and the closer the better.

Get your experience with whatever sanctioning body you can. The rules are not what will be driving your car. In SCCA you won't be caring about classes and points and all until you've been at it for a while, maybe a year.

Most SCCA regions have practice or test-and-tune days that offer more seat time and less pressure, and more chance for coaching. In any case go to and enter the events. Every bit of driving helps.

Numerous track-day organizations also offer tutelage and track time. Every bit of driving helps.

It is possible to do precision driving on the street, well within laws of the road and of common sense. Put the wheels where you want them every time, time the traffic lights so you don't have to slow or speed up, all that kind of thing means paying a particular kind of attention.

There is no good reason not to practice precision driving wherever and whenever you go.

Yea, do not sweat the classes. Any mods in SCCA will put you in a class and more than likely put the hurt on you.

There are high performance driving events at Road Atlanta and maybe Sebring. No racing, just instruction. Porsche Club, BMW Club, and there are some SVT clubs that will participate.

Just a quick look for RA...

Get the right helmet, get the car inspected and make a weekend out of it. I cannot express how much you will learn at the track with the right instruction.

I was in the same boat earlier this year and the best advice I can give you is to:

Get out there and do it! :bigthumbsup

I'm running stock setup for SCCA and is working very very well in my Mustang. Depending on the region, as long as you use your stock wheel size, you can use whatever tire you want! That's a heck of an upgrade to stay in that category :yelpleased:

Well um gonna get smoked like a pen joint at a Powell. No way I'm taking anything off my car. That's ok, as long as I get to play. Next investment is star specs or neova's.

Great news. My only real advice is- leave egos at home. There will be some little Miata running rings around you and it is easy to get the 'red mist' and get all screwed up.

So plenty of fluids and listen.

There is some good advice. I want to share some thoughts as well. I have learned that it is very important to spend quality time learning how to drive before you spend your time "racing". To do this, the BMW, Porsche clubs and others put on really good driver skills days that teach you to understand car control. They teach things like slalom, skid pad (throttle steering), threashold braking, autocross, accident avoidance, and late/early apex. I would really recommend it as it is not very expensive and you get to drive all day long.

Your best bet is to go here: Atlanta Region of SCCA - Sports Car Club of America
Find SoloII events near you and just go attend one. If you want to race in your first attendance, go for it, just remember start slow and build up speed as your comfort level increases.

I personally did not run in the first event I attended, but I did volunteer to work course, so that I could get used to how an SCCA event was run. I have been back at it for 7 years now and I couldn't be happier.

The most important thing is to have fun. Well, have fun and be safe, but safety is a given.

Find the event organizer or instructors and tell them you are new. Walk the course with them. Ask them questions and be social. You will learn a lot more by opening your mouth and asking for help then trying to "figure it out" on your own out on the course.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I went autocrossing for the first time in my life after getting my Boss. So much fun! Spun it at 40 thinking I could ease the back in... Haha

Then I was one lucky sob and was able to attend www.bosstrackattack.com with 6 students and 4 pro instructors at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. Great instruction from none other than "Front Row" Joe Foster of the #15 Multimatic Boss Race car!!! So freaking awesome riding along with him at the end... Incredible.

Now I can't wait to Autocross again!

I spent Sunday with a novice student learning to drive his Boss. As good as that car is, it is almost TOO fast for a novice. Granted we were on the big track and only hit the corners 5 or 6 times a session. Add trying to cope with 440hp, manual transmission and hitting the apex- a handful.

I was salivating to get to drive that car. No. :(

He came to 3rd session with a BumbleBee and 4th session with a GT500. So I left with the impression I was in the wrong line of work!

It's so awesome to hear that people are using the Boss for what it was meant for!

We feel the same way, that's why we raced ours last night:bigthumbsup

How do the stock brembos/pads hold up on a roadcourse?

Hey JP, who do you instruct with? I've been a national PCA instructor for 7 years and just love it.
I've been with The Driver's Edge for a while- a local DE based out of DFW. Started in '97 as a student and worked my way up into instructing within a few years. It is fun-all my pals are gear head instructors too.

Chris- we never had enough velocity to have to get on the brakes very hard. There were to 302S models at the event. Hard core cars!

Here in South FL, we're lucky to have access to so many tracks. Some of them very famous. I along with lots of other track enthusiast run with many groups who also take advantage of the many tracks. The problem down here is not finding an event, because there's one going on every weekend at almost all of the tracks, but rather figuring out where most of your friends will be running. Someone had the great idea of making a site dedicated to track weekends and included every club, that I know of, on the site including their scheduled events for the year. Most if not all of the track guys down here in FL, use the site to plan their next event.:bigthumbsup

When I lived in West Palm, I used to race with EquippeRapide for most of my SoloII events. I actually got into RoadRacing at the old/original Moroso Motorsports Park. I'm pretty sure I still hold the record for fastest FF there:bigthumbsup

Have you raced the roadcourse there since it has become Palm Beach International Raceway!? I haven't, unfortunately, but I'm told the facilities/track are vastly improved.

Also, Sebring will always be a favorite of mine! I just wish they would put in some better track surface!

Yes sir. I ran the new track about a month after it was opened and at night. Kinda scary at first since it was a new layout and dark cause they had no infield lights at the time. I believe I speak for most when I say the new track is not what we thought it would be. Yea it's nice to have it and all but it's boring now. The old track was so much better. I miss it. I ran my first HPDE there. The drag strip, road coarse, and kart track can now be run at the same time unlike before when you were on the road coarse there could be no drag or vise versa. They still have a ways to go. No bathrooms yet, only trailers, but there kept clean. They were going to do all kinds of big projects there but it all fell through.

BTW's I have some videos in this road racing thread labeled TRACK DAY VIDEOS and both the old Moroso and new PBIR are there.
