Bought a JLT Cold Air Intake a few months ago and after a few weeks of stumbling on start up and rough idling it finally decided not to start this morning. I took it to my local dealership and after about 15 minutes hooked up to the IDS, it showed that the car was over fueling about 30%. We threw my stock intake back on and ta-da, the car runs better than it did and will once again chirping the tires in 2nd and 3rd.

I'm not hating on JLT or any other intake manufacturer, but I would like everyone to be cautious on the intakes they buy and keep their stock intake box handy in case any problems arise, since all cars are not created equal.

If anyone has had similar problems please SHARE. Especially if you have solved the problem without a tune.

Hmmm... Weird. I would guess a too lean if anything at all. I'm assuming you double checked all the connections and seals, especially the MAF right.

I have had turbulent MAF reading directly correlated to the JLT since when swapping the stock box in with the same everything else results in settled MAF readings. There is a very long thread on another board about the JLTs and this issue. PM me if you want a link. I assume the erratic MAF reading can result in running rich (and lean)?

I have my tune dialed in and the idle is erratic when hot running the JLT. I am seriously debating going back to the stock box. I could care less about the whine, whistle whatever you want to call it but certainly not "growl" as some say.

No the JLY is no tune required.

I also would have thought it would have run lean not 30% rich. Something else is amiss.

From what BAMA says there is no tune adjustment for CAI or TB or exhaust changes for that matter.

Did you pull the battery cable and do an idle relearn/reset? Sounds like your pcm couldn't adjust for the increased amount of air flow or turbulence. There's also a chance Ford screwed with the tune code if your car is a 13 or 14.

Maybe the Airaid has that bend in the tubing for a reason, it certainly could have been shorter.

perhaps your MAF is dirty. Try cleaning it with some MAF cleaner and see if that corrects the issue. Also make sure all of the hose clamps are tight on the intake.

Yes, I unplugged the battery before. And I even did it about a week ago when is started acting strange. It could be very well the Airaid intake has a better design because of this issue

The JLT wouldn't be the best CAI holding all the 3.7 records if it had a design flaw. Possibly they may have put out a bad batch of tubes from what LandtoSea is saying. But you're probably right with the Battery reset, probably what JLT will suggest. If not OP give that a try too.

If it were the MAF itself then reinstalling stock airbox wouldn't fix it.

Also your cone filter should be as far out on the tube as physically possible. Insert the tip only as we used to say.

Why do I have the feeling if I put your JLT CAI on my car everything would be fine? Kinda hard to mess up a cone filter and a tube. Is your car a 13 or 14?

Well I am giving them the benefit of the doubt to help resolve this. I do not believe it is a bad product, but maybe like you said, just a bad batch. They did not reset the PCM when we installed the stock air box meaning the car knew what it was reading and compensated to it.

I've been running my JLT for about 3-4 months now. I haven't run into any issues regarding the cai. I wonder if there is something different in the 13-14 tunes that cause this problem? Could the type of air filter cause the problem?

It's a 2013. I also find it hard to believe that I can't install just tube and filter.

Just do not tighten them too much if you have the plastic tube since it will bow the tube and the filter will slip off and if it doesn't it may allow air to suck in at the seal point between the void from the tube flexing. I am contemplating getting a carbon fiber tube for mine due to this. In insight I should have spent the extra $ but did not even think of it until after I started having MAF issues.

I think that is JLTs defense I read in the other sites thread on the MAF issues. My problem with that is too many variables involved. Those cars may be running a JLT but the JLT is not making them the top dogs. The JLT could be robbing them some performance but they are so modded it is not as noticeable as the guy with minor mods or none besides the JLT CAI. They are the best indicators of whether there is an issue or not since variables are limited!

I am hardly the expert but that is what I thought until I started doing more homework. The simple placement of the MAF could certainly cause differences in results so it is not that easy to dismiss. Also, that inverted end filter is fairly new and can be adding turbulence? Lastly, that tube is garbage and can certainly be flexing in (changing shape) under WOT. Just talked to a race shop guy who has seen this on a dyno run for one of the race cars they were tuning a couple years ago. This is irrelevant to the JLT only to the point that it was not this model in question but all in the same a plastic tube. In this case the race car was pulling so much air it was collapsing the tube under WOT and the car would lose power so a more drastic end result than what we are discussing.
