Brake ??? '94 5.0L

Trying to help son-in-law fix rear brakes (he's never done it, I've done a dozen or so non-mustangs). Bought new rotor (too worn to turn), pads & re-built caliper (couldn't compress piston). We can't get the pads in the caliper correctly. There are what looks a bit like 'rabbit ears' on the top of the pads that appear to want to go through the top of the caliper (there's even a thin metal 'clip' that looks like it's to keep these 'rabbit ears' in place. When we set the pads up this way the outside pad will NOT rest against the housing where they seem to go. Please.... can you tell me how these pads go into the caliper. Any other info about these would be much appreciated.
