I have a 1969 mustang with drum brakes all the way around. With all the other repairs being done to the car I am holding off on installing disc brakes. Would adding a brake booster help in the functioning of drum brakes. It seems like now I have to put my foot to the floor hard and give myself plenty of space to stop. Would a brake booster help ?

All the brake booster will do is reduce the effort you have to apply to stop the car, it will not help the distance the pedal has to travel, either you have air in the brake system, or a bad master cylinder, or the brake self-adjusters are not working or are too far out of adjustment (I have seen some customers who rarely back up, and this will cause the a gradual loss of pedal), so you can use a brake spoon (adjustment tool, they are cheap) to turn the self-adjusters, pull the rubber plug and insert the bend end into the slot and engage the self-adjuster star wheel, then turn the spoon down to rotate the star wheel, so with the wheel raised off the ground, the brake just barely drags on the drum, do all four, then check your pedal. Post your results. Good Luck.

The thing about brakes--Booster vs Non Booster.

The Master cylinder does the same function, MAKE Hydraulic pressure- It is the key here.

This can be obtained by force only. So, Force is determined by how had you push on the pedal with no Booster assist, or with the Vacuum Booster assist.

Boils down to--To stop, do you want to put your foot on the pedal (with a booster), or push on the pedal to stop (No Booster)?
