Broken piston? What happened?

Hi guys, I had my 5.0 tuned at a local speed shop and they failed to lock down the Dis after timing it. Not knowing I took the car for a long ride and stopped to get gas. When I got back on the interstate the motor started pinging. I thought crap gas and drove it home. When I got home I noticed the motor had a slight lift tick and looked into it further. The number 1 cyclinder had a bent push rod, GREAT!! Now I tear the heads off to check the lifters and found a chunk of the # 1 piston missing. Any ideas as to what might have happened? The cylinder walls are not scared at all. This was a complete rebuild 400 miles ago. 302 brd 30 with stage 2 cam, TFS heads, 12lbs bst, all MSD, EFI w/ BBK intake and fuel rails.

That pinging was detonation. The distributor will try to advance if not locked down. So your total timing was way up there more than likely. When you start pinging, from the timing being to advanced, **** starts to break. And here you are.
looks like I will be visiting the dyno shop in the AM. NOT Happy!!! The only thing I went outside of my shop for (Tune) totaly [email protected]$%S me. Live and learn. Now my motor is a boat anchor, cuz who know what other damage it did, like where the heck is the 2 inch piece if piston that detnated? Had to be detnation cuz the piece that broke off was on the intake side where the piston got way to hot, right at the edge of the fly cut.
Yep detonated AKA BOOM!
i take it back, the distributor will try to retard if its not locked down. either way it was probably detonation. Can you post pictures of the carnage?
Man that sucks, I definitely feel your pain on this one. Post some pic's.
Just went out to the garage to peak on the old girl and realized i can rock the piston around in the cylinder!!! WTF I will post some pics tomorrow, after I have it on the stand..

Oh wow, that's definitely not good. I wonder if you completely blew up the piston?!?!?! You drain the oil yet to see what kind of metal is in there?
1. The tuner didn't set the fuel tables right and leaned the hell out of it (is there an air fuel chart from the dyno runs?) The responsibility falls on his shoulders!
2. If your fuel system isn't up to snuff and there's too much timing, piston breakage can happen!
You always wanna run a Fat safe A/F over 12 lbs of Boost, I like 11.5:bigthumbsup
In your area you should have had EFI Logics or DEZ tune it!
For sure, 11.5 AFR on a boosted engine. It just detonated itself to death. No telling where those 2 pieces went to, unless you're extremely lucky and had them go out the exhaust which would mean they had to miss the valve. More than likely though, they're in the oil pan.
