Broken shifter...

1313 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  61cruser
Well I was out driving a while back and when i went to shift, the whole handle broke off. I am at a loss really on how to go about fixing it. Is there a way to replace the broken piece from inside the car? Or do I have to drop the transmission? I already have the new part as seen in the pictures. Any help would be appreciated. It's a 66 with the original three speed in it.

You might be able to do it in the car. If you disconnect the shift linkages and pull the levers off the shifter, then you might be able to rotate the handle bracket enough to punch the pin out. If not then you'll have to pull the whole shifter off the transmission. I was looking at mine, you might have to drop the rear of he trans a bit to get the shifter to come out.

Broken shifter

Disconnect the shift rods, remove three bolts and pull it out. You can then clean it, fixit, regrease it and replace the lower shift boot. The last photo looks like you have the remains of the lower shift boot. The lower boot helps keep out road noise and dirt. It's worth replacing.

Yeah the boot was good, but ripped when it broke off. I just tore the rest of it off anyway because it was needing replaced after it ripped. I'll take a look at it tomorrow with the advice and see if I can't get it done. Thanks for the help.

Fstbkpieces has the right idea. Mark the rods with masking tape so there is no confusion as to how they go back on. The trans housing is aluminum, so be very careful when removing and installing the mount bolts. The main reason for taking the whole shifter out is to remove and install the front to back pivot pin that goes thru the U piece that broke. Once you see it, it will be more clear to you.

So to replace the lower boot, the whole shifter mechanism has to come out? I cannot find any videos, literature, posts, or other instructions on how to replace the lower boot. Might as well do it right the first time while I have the upper portion apart.
No. You can replace the lower boot with the shift forks installed. But the shift rods do have to be disconnected. There is a rectangular slot in the bottom for the shifters to poke thru and the boot fits above the shifter mount bolts. This photo is from my '66.

Mine is a 4-speed but I found it necessary to remove the shifter to install the boot. Its a complicated boot to fit otherwise. Maybe the 3-speed is simpler?

Right on, thanks for the pics. First ones I've seen. Makes more sense now. I think I will just take the whole shifter off and clean/paint/lube it while it's all apart. Might as well get a new reverse switch while I'm at it. The masking tape idea is a good one. I use round, paper key tags and safety wire when possible, so I can label and jot down notes. That way I can still paint the parts.
