HI,

I am looking at doing a cam swap on my '68 mustang and had some questions. I have a 289 with the stock c4 and stock rear end. So far i have long tube headers and flowmaster exhaust, new intake and 4bbl 600 carb but other than that stock. I just the car as weekend driver, just something to have fun in and drive around. and want some more get up and go without breaking the bank.

I am looking to get the COMP Cams Camshaft Set High Energy 268H Hydraulic Flat Tappet 1500-5500 RPM 289/302 full kit so the cam, lifters springs and timing chain. My question is do i need anything else to do the swap or can i just basically do a 1 to 1 swap of all the included parts in the kit? Is there anything else that i am missing or overlooking? I might eventually get new heads but i don't have the budget for that right now.

Any advice would be great.

Well if you go to Comp cams website, for that cam you will find, you also need to install screw-in studs and guide plates, as with stiffer springs and higher lift cams, the rocker arm studs start pulling out. Also to do the screw-in studs and to change the valve springs, retainers and keepers, it is easier to do with the heads off the car. So if you go that route, you will need head gasket set, plus the timing chain gasket set (for changing the cam), plus antifreeze 2 gal at 100% mix with equal water to get 50/50 mix, 5 qts oil and oil filter, camshaft break-in additive, etc. And if you are not pulling the motor, you probably will have to remove the AC condensor if you have it, the radiator, the grille and any ornaments in the middle, water pump, timing cover, distributor, hood latch, and whatever else is in the way. And be very careful on timing the engine, if you get it wrong, you could bend valves and damage pistons. Not to discourage you, just to make you careful. My 2 cts. Good Luck.
