Carfax isn't perfect. Cars that have been repaired without an accident or insurance claim are a couple of reasons "Pre-Wrecked" cars can have a clean carfax report. Recently I drove to a dealers home to see a "clean carfax" Lexus SC 430 he's brought home and my wife was interested in. Popping the hood revealed missing fender and radiator retainer bolts, body color overspray in all the worng places and a host of other shade tree patch-ups. The dealer reminded me of the "clean carfax" and I explained that isn't a guarantee.

Yeah I know they are not perfect but its still a good start. I looked at an Escort for my GF and there was Overspray, and aftermarket Fender and Hood, New Radiator, Damaged Wheel, and Replacement Door Glass and the Salesman kept telling me it had a clean CarFax "After" I pointed everything out to him.
