Can I swap my V6 17's rubber to 05-09 bullitt'

1922 Views 20 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  pmr2000
Does anyone know if my base 17" 225/60 tires will fit on the 05-09 Ford bullitt 17x8 rims? How about the sensors?

Are the base rims 17 x7 so is that a problem?

The Bullitts had a 235/55 so would a 225 be too narrow?

I know nobody likes 17's but I found a set real cheap.....

Thanks.

I'm not sure how to answer your question, but I wanted to respond to your last statement -- there is NOTHING wrong with 17's.

Your best bet is to ask your local tire shop. My guess is that it will be okay.
should be just fine. i`m running 255/50 on 8"x17 which is the widest i can go on 8". i thought the 17 factory wheels were 8" and the 16" wheels were 7". i really like the 17`s, i would only change if there was choices for 16" with bigger sidewalls. :)
Your tires are about 8.86 inches wide, they'll work. You're lucky you have 225's, I have 215's and have considered the same option. I also like the 05-09 gt machined, split 5 spokes. Don't have a picture, but i'm sure everyone has seen the wheels i'm talking about. Cheap craigslist option to the base wheels.

^^^I agree^^^ 17`s are a good size. I had them on my last two Corvettes & my `00GT:yup:

I believe the wheel width range for those tires is 6.5"-8.5". They will work, but when you replace the tires, I would consider going to a wider tire to get a better fit.
Thanks hopefully they clear the stock V6 brakes....don't think they are any bigger than the 05-09 stock GT brakes.

CJ Pony still sells them will give them a tech call for advise, if they work will report back here!
Both CJ Pony and my local tire guy say these should fit fine. Need new tire stems but the sensors can be reused.

Also swapping the 225 /60 /17 to the 8 inch wide rim is fine too- He said divide 225 by 25.4mm = 8.86 less 8 inches for the rim leaves 0.86 /2 overlapping tire so 0.43 on each side. Less than .5 is perfect, .5 to 1 inch is acceptable.
In case anyone looking to go this route can confirm they fit on base V6 fine, clears caliper, stock tire fits fine:

I like the look of those on your car. I think sometimes people, including myself, get carried away with bigger is better when it comes to wheels. Wheel design is just as important. 17 inch Bulitts look nice.

I'd go to 05-09 wheels but the cost of mounting the tire again (since it needs the TPMS) sort of kills the awesome used prices on older wheels. I love the "fanblades" that came on some of the S197 GT's. They were 18 inch and super neat.

I don't have much money to spend right now on mods, but i'm always checking craigslist. I know what you're saying about the tpms and such. Most of the ones I see include tires and tpms. I did see a set like you are talking about for about $600 with tires. Don't remember the condition of the tires. Also when searching craigslist, I always find myself searching farther and farther away. Then I think, "would I drive over 100 miles each way for wheels?"
They look great. I might have to start looking around for some.:yup:

Pricing is odd. I find complete sets of wheels, with good tires and TPMS for around $500. But there will be other listings for the same wheels, just the rims, no tires, no tpms for like $375. Uh, where's the value in that?

Most the time it's cheaper to just get them complete. I'm still waiting on a deal.

I have similar findings. I also love the take off 07-09 gt500 wheels, 10-12 gt500 wheels, 11-12 gt/cs, v6pp wheels. But yeah, i'm waiting for some wheels better than mine for free.
I know in NY the TPM light on the dash will not fail inspection, only the check engine light. I drove my '08 Mustang without sensors although having the light on is annoying.

I paid $140 to swap and mount, balance, new stems, reused sensors. Got the wheels from Mustangs Unlimited for $450 total -$105 a piece plus $30 for shipping no tax to NY.

They are takeoffs from a 07-09 GT judging from the old TPM band mark, and the Ford not running pony center caps. But not a mark on them compared to used.

The spokes are silver sparkle with a polished lip, not the plain painted silver seen on some s197's.

Looking at Craigslist seen them for anywhere from $200-500 depending on condition.

Scrap yards by me are paying 63 cents a pound for alum. rims so even as scrap the old ones are worth about $60!

Not a bad price for shipping either. Any idea if they are heavier or lighter than your old base wheels?
Funny you ask I weighted, about exactly the same around 23 lbs each. So no unsprung weight advantage....

The FRPP mufflers are half the weight of stock 10 vs 20lbs if you are looking to save some weight!

Yeah, I figured they would be similar just based on the spoke design. My Bassanis dropped some weight, too.

That's alright though, they look like they belong on mustangs. And at least they don't weigh more.
