Can you mix oil in Mustang

The 2011 Mustang GT calls for 8 quarts of 5w-20. I know that is what is recommended. I would like to go to a thicker weight like 5W-30 but yet not sure how it would affect the new motors cam settings. So what I am going to ask may sound stupid but I really would like to know. I am a little nervous to go to a full 8 quart 5W-30. When you read on oils it does say they can be mixed but may alter the oil warranty ratings.

The HTHS viscosity of most 5W-20 is 2.8 The average HTHS viscosity of most 5W-30 is 3.1

So if you at least stay with the same synthetic brand oil - I will use Mobil 1 for example - what if you put in 4 quarts of Synthetic Mobil 1 5W-20 and 4 quarts of Synthetic Mobil 1 5W-30. Since it is at least the same brand oil would it not blend together and at least then give you a little higher weight of 5w-25 with an HTHS viscosity of 2.95. I could live with that.

I guess the deciding factor would be if the oil blended together.:?:

what is the purpose of goiing to a heavier oil? Remeber the oil jets under each piston , have to do their job. I imagine the lighter oil helps with this..I see no reason too mix oils.. I use Mobile one 5w 20w and have no tick or other problems--Stick with the reccommended weight.
You can mix it like that but honestly if you want to go with 5W30 off the bat, you can go that route. My Cobra calls for 5W20 but i've always used mobile 1 syn 5W30. If you said 10W30, i would say definitley no.
5W20 is more for the fuel efficiency. 5W30 is thin enough for the valve train due to the tight tolerances. But 5W30 is the thickest i would go.
I would stay with 5w20.

My accord runs 5w20 and it has 110k and not a tick.
why do you care? Run what Ford tells you to run and stop over analyzing it...
btw I've run Mobil 1 10-30 for 11 years and 200K miles on my Cobra, it runs like new
If it calls for 5w20 regular oil then 5w30 synthetic wouldnt hurt but once you go syn your stuck. The factory recommendation is going to be your best bet.

Absolutely, the mechanics and engineers that built these power plants recommend that weight oil for a reason. The oil needs to reach alot of parts and needs to be pumped under alot pressure. Stick with the 5w 20w and regular oil changes. Car guys that have had cars for 20 yrs tell me they never let the oil get dirty.
